Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a defect in one of the enzymes or transport proteins involved in the synthesis of cortisol in the adrenal cortex. Virile form of CAH characterized by cortisol deficiency and hyperandrogenism. Klinefelter syndrome is one of the most frequent chromosomal diseases leading to the development of primary hypogonadism.

Normal heart function depends on complex regulation by the brain, and abnormalities in the brain‒heart axis affect various diseases, such as myocardial infarction and anxiety disorders. However, systematic tracking of the brain regions associated with the input and output of the heart is lacking. In this study, we injected retrograde transsynaptic pseudorabies virus (PRV) and anterograde transsynaptic herpes simplex virus (HSV) into the left ventricular wall of mice to identify the whole-brain regions associated with the input to and output from the heart.

Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have demonstrated potential neuroprotective and cardioprotective effects in preliminary studies. This study evaluates the efficacy of empagliflozin (EMPA) in reducing ischemia/reperfusion damage in both the brain and heart using rat models. Ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction (MI) were induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats, which were randomized into three groups: (1) Control (no EMPA), (2) Acute treatment (EMPA, 10 mg/kg IV, administered 10 min before ischemia and 1 min before reperfusion), and (3) Chronic treatment (EMPA, 20 mg/kg in food for 7 days before ischemia).

Studies have shown that postmenopausal women have more metabolic abnormalities than premenopausal women. No consensus exists on how serum uric acid (sUA) affects metabolism-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in postmenopausal women. This prospective observational study examined this link using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017 to 2020 data.

Chronic administration of ivabradine improves cardiac Ca handling and function in a rat model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a severe muscle disease caused by mutations in the gene encoding for the intracellular protein dystrophin, is associated with impaired cardiac function and arrhythmias. A causative factor for complications in the dystrophic heart is abnormal calcium (Ca) handling in ventricular cardiomyocytes, and restoration of normal Ca homeostasis has emerged as therapeutic strategy. Here, we used a rodent model of DMD, the dystrophin-deficient DMD rat, to test the following hypothesis: chronic administration of ivabradine (IVA), a drug clinically approved for the treatment of heart failure, improves Ca handling in dystrophic ventricular cardiomyocytes and thereby enhances contractile performance in the dystrophic heart.
