Fracture toughness is a key property of epoxy resins with a high glass transition temperature (T), used in carbon fiber/epoxy composites for aerospace applications. Conventional toughening methods rely on adding toughening agents, often compromising the processibility and thermal stability. This study introduces a simple self-toughening approach that enhances the fracture toughness without sacrificing other properties by controlling the cured epoxy network structure. Tetraglycidyl 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) epoxy resin was cured using mixtures of structural isomeric curing agents, 3,3'- and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (3,3'- and 4,4'-DDS), at ratios of 7:3, 5:5, and 3:7. The optimal 7:3 ratio produced a resin with 30% higher fracture toughness compared to TGDDM/3,3'-DDS and 100% higher than the TGDDM/4,4'-DDS system. The T of the self-toughened resin ranged from 241 to 266 °C, which was intermediate between the T values of the TGDDM/3,3'-DDS and TGDDM/4,4'-DDS systems. This improvement is attributed to the higher crosslink density and reduced free volume of the epoxy network. These findings demonstrate that simply mixing isomeric curing agents enables self-toughening, providing a practical and efficient strategy to enhance the performance of high-T epoxy resins in advanced composite applications.

Bacteria have the potential to exhibit divergent stereochemical preferences for different levels of chiral structures, including from molecule, supramolecule, to nanomicroscale helical structure. Accordingly, the structure-activity relationship between chirality and bactericidal activity remains uncertain. In this study, we seek to understand the multivalent molecular chirality effect of chiral supramolecular polymers on antibacterial activity.

Nanostructures with curved surfaces and chiral-directing residues are highly desirable in the synthesis of asymmetric chemicals, but they remain challenging to synthesize without using unique templates due to the disfavored torsion energy of twisted architectures toward chiral centers. Here, a strategy for the facile fabrication of highly cured capsule-shaped catalysts with chiral interiors by the amplification of molecular chirality via the irreversible cross-linking of 2D asymmetric laminates is presented. The key to the success of these irregular 2D layers is the use of hierarchical assembly of chiral macrocycles, which can exactly regulate the cured nanostructures as well as asymmetric catalysis.

During the production of certain meat processed products, such as cured ham and cold meat, large amounts of wastewater with high organic matter and salt content are generated. In contrast with the conventional management processes, which involves high energy consumption, this study proposes the valorisation of such meat brines through anaerobic fermentation to produce added-value organic acids. Several brines coming from different meat processing processes were tested to evaluate their acidification potential as well as to establish the main operation parameters in the fermenter: pH and the substrate-to-inoculum ratio.

Novel tetrafluoro-λ-sulfanyl-containing oligomers prepared by visible light-promoted addition of 1,4-(bis-chlorotetrafluoro-λ-sulfanyl) benzene or 1,3-(bis-chlorotetrafluoro-λ-sulfanyl) benzene to either 1,4-diethynyl benzene or the 1,3-diethynyl isomers form hard, stress resistant thin films on spin casting. The isomeric oligomers were utilized to establish a structure-function relationship for the mechanical properties of films prepared from the oligomers. The Young's moduli of 145-nm-thick cured films could reach 60 GPa.
