Gastroesophageal carcinomas, including gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma (GEA) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), pose a global health challenge due to their heterogeneity. The approach to diagnosis and treatment should first differentiate between GEA and ESCC. Over the past decade, therapies for metastatic or advanced GEA/ESCC have expanded, with several new therapeutic targets alongside trastuzumab for metastatic HER2-positive GEA. Four key biomarkers are essential for targeted therapy: HER2 overexpression/amplification, deficient mismatch repair/microsatellite instability (dMMR/MSI), PD-L1, and Claudin18.2 expression. Immunohistochemistry is the recommended method for these biomarkers evaluation. In addition, the assessment of biomarkers like FGFR2b is likely to become routine in the near future. Experts from the Spanish Society of Pathology (SEAP) and the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) have formed a consensus to optimize biomarker detection and usage in clinical practice. Their recommendations aim to improve personalized treatment strategies for GEA and ESCC patients, integrating new diagnostic insights into routine care.

Background: Field resistance to malathion was reported for Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly), Ceratitis capitata, populations collected in Spain in 2004 and 2005, when medfly control mainly relied on malathion bait sprays. The mutation G328A in the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) gene (Ccace2) was then identified as the main resistance mechanism in a field-derived resistant strain. However, outdoor plant protection products containing malathion were withdrawn from the European Union in 2009 and other insecticides gained importance, such as spinosad and pyrethroids, though other organophosphates were occasionally used for medfly control for a few years.

The implementation of the Medical Device Regulation and Royal Decree 192/2023 not only requires manufacturers to enhance safety measures in the production of medical devices but is also complemented by additional regulations impacting hospitals, clinics, and healthcare personnel. Among these is the requirement to identify and report serious incidents to the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS). To establish a baseline and evaluate the dissemination efforts of these concepts at the level of scientific societies and other organizations, serious incidents involving ophthalmic medical devices reported to AEMPS since 2018 and subject to health alerts have been identified.
