The influence of different calcium sources on the mineralization behavior of and their roles in microbiologically influenced corrosion inhibition (MICI) of Q235 carbon steel were investigated. Calcium lactate, calcium nitrate, and calcium L-aspartate were selected as alternative calcium sources to assess their effects on bacterial growth, carbonate deposition, and corrosion resistance. exhibited stable growth in all tested media, with the pH exceeding 8 after 14 days, promoting carbonate precipitation. Under sterile conditions, all calcium sources provided some corrosion inhibition, with calcium L-aspartate demonstrating the most effective protection. In bacterial inoculated systems, calcium lactate and calcium L-aspartate facilitated the formation of a continuous CaCO mineralized layer, significantly reducing corrosion, whereas calcium nitrate resulted in discontinuous carbonate deposits, promoting localized corrosion. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization analyses confirmed that the mineralized layers formed with calcium lactate and calcium L-aspartate significantly enhanced corrosion resistance, while calcium nitrate exacerbated corrosion due to nitrate-reducing bacterial activity. These findings emphasize the crucial role of calcium source selection in MICI and provide insights for optimizing microbial mineralization strategies for corrosion mitigation.

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is proposed to be the molecular mechanism underlying learning and memory in the brain. A key event for LTP is the influx of calcium into post-synaptic neurons via multiple ion channel control systems. One such system involves N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), which were originally believed to be essential for LTP and new learning.

Calcium ions (Ca) play pivotal roles in a host of cellular signalling processes. The requirement to maintain resting cytosolic Ca levels in the 100-200 nM range provides a baseline for dynamic excursions from resting levels that determine the nature of many physiological responses to external stimuli and developmental processes. This review provides an overview of the key components of the Ca homeostatic machinery, including known channel-mediated Ca entry pathways along with transporters that act to shape the cytosolic Ca signature.

The rapid depletion of fossil fuels and, more importantly, the environmental challenges associated with their use, have driven efforts to transition toward biomass-derived platform molecules with the aim of producing more biodegradable and functional materials. In this context, the catalytic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of cyclic monomers have emerged as effective synthetic routes for the controlled production of polyesters with defined properties. Among the catalysts developed for these processes, those based on calcium are particularly appealing due to the abundance, low cost and biocompatibility of this metal.

Nephrolithiasis, or kidney stone formation, is a widespread global health concern. This study examines the effects of polyphenolic extracts, along with their anthocyanin and non-anthocyanin fractions, from sumac fruit, pomegranate peel, almond leaves, falsa fruit, and banana bract on the crystallization of calcium oxalate (CaC2O4.nH2O) and brushite (CaHPO4 2H2O) in vitro.
