Two new C steroids periplosteroid A-B () and seven known C steroids (-) were isolated from the stems and roots of , among them, compounds , , and were firstly isolated from this plant. The structures of periplosteroid A-B were identified by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, including 1D-NMR, 2D-NMR, HR-ESI-MS, UV, and IR spectral data. The results of cytotoxic activity showed that all the isolates exhibited certain inhibitory activity on six kinds of human tumour cell lines (786-O, MKN-45, 5637, L-02, MCF7 and 293 T).

In recent years, multiple population outbreaks of the Northern Pacific starfish (Asterias amurensis) have been documented off the coast of Qingdao. Starfish use chemosensation to regulate their life history and interactions with the environment, with their secondary metabolites serving as deterrents and dispersal agents against predators. While the eggs of marine fish are passive and susceptible, we hypothesized that the secondary metabolites of A.

The power of interspecific sociality: how humans provide social buffering for horses.

In this study, we assessed the interspecific "social buffering effect" of humans on horses, exploring how human presence influences stress responses in horses in an unfamiliar environment using the "isolation paradigm." We examined nine Haflinger horses under two counterbalanced conditions: with a passive human stranger (social condition) or alone (isolation condition). Stress responses were assessed through cortisol measurements, heart rate monitoring, and behavioral observations.

The gut microbiome is known to have a bidirectional relationship with sex hormone homeostasis; however, its role in mediating interactions between the primary regulatory axes of sex hormones and their productions is yet to be fully understood. We utilized both conventionally raised and gnotobiotic mouse models to investigate the regulatory role of the gut microbiome on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Male and female conventionally raised mice underwent surgical modifications as follows: (1) hormonally intact controls; (2) gonadectomized males and females; (3) gonadectomized males and females supplemented with testosterone and estrogen, respectively.
