Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), is the third most common cardiovascular disease. A low amount of mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN) reflects mitochondrial dysfunctions and has been associations with arterial cardiovascular diseases. However, the role of mtDNA-CN in venous cardiovascular disease was unclear.

Assessing the link of malnutrition with diabetes and mortality risk in heart failure patients.

ESC Heart Fail

March 2025

Department of Musculoskeletal Ageing and Science, Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences, University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK.

Aims: Malnutrition is increasingly recognized as a significant factor influencing the clinical outcomes of patients with heart failure (HF). Diabetes exacerbates risks like hospitalizations and mortality due to cardiovascular complications. The aim of this study was to explore the association of malnutrition with diabetes and its prognostic impact on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with HF, using the nutritional assessment tools, controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score and geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI).

Complement C5/C5a in the diagnosis and treatment of Graves ophthalmopathy: A Mendelian randomized study.

Zhong Nan Da Xue Xue Bao Yi Xue Ban

October 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Third Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha 410013, China.

Objectives: Graves' ophthalmopathy is a complex organ-specific autoimmune disease with an unclear pathogenesis. Complement component 5/5a (C5/C5a), a key element of the component system, may play a significant role in the disease's pathological process. This study aims to investigate the causal relationship between C5/C5a and Graves' ophthalmopathy using Mendelian randomization (MR) to provide new theoretical insights for its diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose/objective(s): Use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) versus three-dimensional conformal external beam radiation therapy (3D-CRT) for definitive chemoradiation therapy (CRT) in locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC) has been associated with decreased late pneumonitis, decreased high dose to the heart (itself associated with improved overall survival), and improved patient quality of life. In a statewide radiation oncology quality consortium, we sought to evaluate the impact of IMRT versus 3D-CRT treatment technique on dosimetry and toxicity.

Materials/methods: From 2012 to 2022, 1746 LA-NSCLC patients meeting inclusion criteria underwent definitive RT (90% CRT) with either 3D-CRT (n=313) or IMRT (n=1433) and were enrolled in the [quality consortium] prospective, multicenter statewide initiative.

Purpose: Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) combined with lenvatinib (Len) and immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) in treating advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) still needs further confirmation. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of HAIC combined with Len and ICI (HAIC + Len + ICI) versus Len alone in advanced HCC.

Methods: A total of 290 patients in Len group and 349 patients in HAIC + Len + ICI group were analysed.
