Sound clinical judgment (CJ) is essential for providing quality patient care. Newly licensed nurses lack the previous experiences needed to inform CJ, which could result in harm. This project aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of in situ and structured debriefing on the development of CJ among newly licensed nurses during their orientation. A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group posttest design was used to compare CJ among newly licensed nurses who used in situ and structured debriefing during their initial orientation to those who did not use debriefing methodology. CJ was improved through in situ and structured debriefing. Newly licensed nurses also perceived debriefing as valuable for analyzing their performance and developing a personal improvement plan. Debriefing during orientation has the potential to improve CJ among newly licensed nurses and promote patient safety. Nurse leaders must implement methods to improve CJ among newly licensed nurses to address the existing decline in competency. Given their benefits, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, debriefing methodologies should also be considered to promote CJ development among nurses transitioning to new care environments and advanced practice roles.

The post-pandemic healthcare landscape significantly impacted the professional nursing workforce by exacerbating existing challenges, including the academic-practice gap of new nurse graduates. Transition to practice (TTP) programs have been proven effective in supporting newly licensed registered nurses as they move into practice. A well-designed TTP program empowers new nurses to become resilient and competent, enhancing patient care and contributing to a healthier work environment.

The 2015-16 Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic has posed unprecedented concern for maternal-infant health, mainly due to the substantial risk of microcephaly and other neurological birth abnormalities associated with congenital ZIKV syndrome (CZS). As licenced vaccines and effective antivirals are still unavailable, attention has been focused on post-delivery in vitro or translational in vivo studies to understand the impact of maternal ZIKV infection on placentation and neurodevelopmental consequences for the foetus. Here, we review clinical and translational studies highlighting ZIKV-induced maternal-foetal interface dysfunction, adding to our previous observations of experimental ZIKV vertical transmission to pregnant rhesus monkeys and newly published post-epidemic findings about the theme.
