It is unclear whether remembered psychiatry-related exchanges across the inner-German border differed from those in other societal areas. Were there differences in the confrontation with the "other" German state within vs outside psychiatry?Qualitative analysis of 20 guided cotemporary witness interviews (re 1960-1985) conducted in the Rhineland and Saxony. The former GDR interviewees outside psychiatry perceived the FRG as an important point of reference, other than reverse. East German psychiatrists were strongly oriented towards (specialist) FRG discourses. FRG psychiatrists appreciated social psychiatric reform initiatives in the GDR.Contemporary witness memories suggest differences in inner-German exchanges between the psychiatric field and other areas of society. This may be due to the shared professional-academic tradition within medicine.

Temporal Dynamics of Depressive Symptoms, Apathy, Daily Activities, and Cognitive Decline in Older People From the General Population: A Network Analysis.

Am J Geriatr Psychiatry

February 2025

Department of Psychiatry (AJCS, EJG), Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands; Health Campus The Hague (EJG), Department of Public Health & Primary Care, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, The Netherlands. Electronic address:

Background: The prevalence of depressive symptoms, apathy, and cognitive decline increases with age. Understanding the temporal dynamics of these symptoms could provide valuable insights into the early stages of cognitive decline, allowing for more timely and effective treatment and management.

Methods: Participants from the Prevention of Dementia by Intensive Vascular Care (preDIVA) trial cohort with baseline and ≥3 follow-up measurements were included, with a median of 7.

Hemispheric asymmetries in episodic memory.

Handb Clin Neurol

March 2025

Laboratory of Neuropsychology of Memory, IRCSS Santa Lucia Foundation, Rome, Italy; Department of Systems Medicine, Tor Vergata University, Rome, Italy. Electronic address:

The term "episodic memory" refers to our ability to remember past personal experiences. This ability is severely disrupted following bilateral damage to a dedicated neural substrate located symmetrically in the mesial temporal lobes. Milder deficits are also observed following unilateral damage to the same structures.

Multi-region processing during sleep for memory and cognition.

Proc Jpn Acad Ser B Phys Biol Sci

March 2025

Laboratory for Sleeping-Brain Dynamics, Research Center for Idling Brain Science, University of Toyama, Toyama, Japan.

Over the past decades, the understanding of sleep has evolved to be a fundamental physiological mechanism integral to the processing of different types of memory rather than just being a passive brain state. The cyclic sleep substates, namely, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep, exhibit distinct yet complementary oscillatory patterns that form inter-regional networks between different brain regions crucial to learning, memory consolidation, and memory retrieval. Technical advancements in imaging and manipulation approaches have provided deeper understanding of memory formation processes on multi-scales including brain-wide, synaptic, and molecular levels.

Introduction: Considering the globally growing population and the rising incidence of dementia, it is important to understand the proportion of dementia cases affected by vascular brain disease. We aimed to study the incidence of vascular dementia (VD) and other dementias in a defined population in Finland to better understand VD's contribution to the total incidence of dementias and to assess the sensitivity of their diagnostics.

Methods: We aimed to collect all dementia diagnoses made in Northern Savo, Finland, in 2020.

Emotional events are known to be prioritized during episodic encoding, leading to more detailed recollections compared to neutral events. Encoding an emotional event can influence the mnemonic fate of preceding or subsequent neutral events. Studies examining the impact of emotion on memory for neighboring neutral events have produced inconsistent results, which could be due to differences in the conceptual association between emotional and neutral stimuli.
