Background: Epilepsy is one of the most common serious neurological disorders and affects individuals of all ages across the globe. The aim of this study is to provide estimates of the epilepsy burden on the global, regional, and national levels for 1990-2021.
Methods: Using well established Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) methodology, we quantified the prevalence of active idiopathic (epilepsy of genetic or unknown origin) and secondary epilepsy (epilepsy due to an underlying abnormality of the brain structure or chemistry), as well as incidence, death, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) by age, sex, and location (globally, 21 GBD regions and seven super-regions, World Bank country income levels, Socio-demographic Index [SDI], and 204 countries) and their trends from 1990 to 2021.
Children born to mothers infected by Zika virus (ZIKV) during pregnancy are at increased risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes including microcephaly, epilepsy, and neurocognitive deficits, collectively known as Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome. To study the impact of ZIKV on infant brain development, we collected resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from 28 normocephalic ZIKV-exposed children and 16 socio-demographically similar but unexposed children at 23-27 months of age. We assessed group differences in frequency band power and brain synchrony, as well as the relationship between these metrics and age.

A new modified approach was used to synthesize hydroxyapatite-carbon nanocomposite (HAP-C) by utilizing cement kiln dust (CKD), which is an industrial waste product, as a source of calcium. Calcium from CKD was first chelated using citric acid, and the chelate was transformed into calcium carbonate and carbon by calcination at 450 °C for 1 h, then reacted with ortho-phosphoric acid using a precipitation method, thus serving as a precursor for the formation of HAP-C. Then, HAP-C was calcined at various temperatures for 2 h after it reached the desired temperature at a heating rate of 10 °C/min.

USAID PMI ITN Durability Monitoring Project, Bamako, Mali.
Background: Monitoring insecticide levels and physical integrity over time is essential for assessing the durability of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), which largely depends on the net handling habits of users. This study determined the insecticide content and effectiveness of ITNs (Yorkool and PermaNet 2.0) at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months after a mass distribution campaign in Mali.
