Purpose: To report the visual and anatomical outcomes of Descemet membrane epiretinal graft for refractory full-thickness macular holes (MH).

Methods: This interventional case series included patients with refractory MH who previously underwent standard pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling for repair of MH with no success. Donor corneas unsuitable for keratoplasty were stripped at the Eye Bank. The corneo-scleral button was stained with blue dye, punched to obtain a 2-mm Descemet membrane graft which was positioned over the MH. At the end of surgery, 20% sulfur hexafluoride gas tamponade was administered.

Results: Twelve eyes of 12 patients with a mean follow-up of 8 ± 4 months were included. The MH closure rate was 91.7%. Best-corrected visual acuity significantly improved from 1.09 ± 0.56 preoperatively to 0.46 ± 0.54 logMAR (20/63 Snellen) after surgery (P = 0.006). The external limiting membrane and ellipsoid zone recovery rates were 33.3% and 41.7%, respectively.

Conclusions: Descemet membrane epiretinal graft leads to satisfactory anatomic and visual outcomes for eyes with refractory MH.

Iridectomy combined with posterior approach anterior chamber gas injection technique: a novel technique for the treatment of extensive Descemet's membrane detachment.

Eye Vis (Lond)

March 2025

Rehabilitation Medicine Center, Department of Ophthalmology, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital, Affiliated People's Hospital, Hangzhou Medical College, Hangzhou, 310014, Zhejiang, China.

Background: To present the iridectomy combined with posterior approach anterior chamber gas injection technique for the treatment of extensive Descemet's membrane detachment (DMD), which is a novel surgical approach for the management of DMD after phacoemulsification.

Case Presentation: The surgical technique was performed on a 68-year-old female with a history of cataract phacoemulsification surgery and two times of anterior chamber gas injection to treat DMD. After creating a scleral tunnel at 4 o'clock of the limbus, the iris root in that direction was cut off.

Purpose: To assess rates of steroid-induced ocular hypertension, de novo glaucoma, and rejection episodes with long term, off-label use of fluorometholone 0.1% after Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) in patients without preexisting glaucoma.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed records of 250 patients without previous glaucoma, who underwent DMEK between 2015 and 2019, used prednisolone acetate 1% for 2 months, and then switched to fluorometholone 0.

The eye of the laughing dove (Spilopelia senegalensis) is uniquely adapted to thrive in arid environments, withstanding airborne particles and harsh conditions, demonstrating its remarkable structural and functional resilience. This study aimed to explore the cellular composition of the laughing dove's cornea, focusing on telocytes-a cell type previously unreported in avian corneas. This work represents the first demonstration of telocytes in the cornea of any bird species.

Management of severe bilateral toxic anterior segment syndrome after immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery.

J Fr Ophtalmol

February 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Health Sciences, Basaksehir Cam and Sakura City Hospital, Basaksehir Olympic Boulevard Road, Basaksehir, Istanbul, Turkey.

Purpose: The frequency and popularity of immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) is increasing. We discuss the course of rehabilitation for a patient who underwent ISBCS and developed toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) in both eyes.

Methods: This study is a case report.
