Pattern separation and pattern completion in early childhood.

Pattern separation, or distinguishing similar experiences from one another, and pattern completion, in which components of an experience prompt retrieval or forgetting of an event pattern as a unit, are essential components of episodic memory. However, these two components are sometimes described as opposite ends of a continuum and sometimes described as independent processes. Here, we examined the relations between the two processes for the same events in children between 4 and 7 y. Mnemonic discrimination (the behavioral signature of pattern separation) improved with age; holistic recollection (the behavioral signature of pattern completion) did not change in this age range. Crucially, the two behaviors were unrelated, controlling for the effect of age, and even when examining their relations at the fine-grained level of memory for individual events.

Deep-Learning-Assisted Understanding of the Self-Assembly of Miktoarm Star Block Copolymers.

ACS Nano

March 2025

School of Chemical Science and Engineering, Tongji University, 1239 Siping Road, Shanghai 200092, China.

The self-assemblies of topological complex block copolymers, especially the AB type miktoarm star ones, are fascinating topics in the soft matter field, which represent typical self-assembly behaviors analogous to those of biological membranes. However, their diverse topological asymmetries and versatile spontaneous curvatures result in rather complex phase separations that deviate significantly from the common mechanisms. Thus, numerous trial-and-error experiments with tremendous parameter space and intricate relationships are needed to study their assemblies.

Brain asymmetries in figurative language comprehension.

March 2025

CIMeC, Center for Mind/Brain Sciences, University of Trento, Rovereto, Italy. Electronic address:

This chapter reviews the literature concerning the neural basis of three types of figurative expressions, namely, idioms, metaphors, and irony. Besides these three forms of language, which are the most investigated, many other types exist, differing in their linguistic structure and, consequently, in the corresponding comprehension processes. After defining the most common figurative expressions and showing how they differ in terms of linguistic properties, the chapter presents early studies that focused on the role of the right hemisphere (RH) in figurative language comprehension in general, without a clear distinction among different forms.

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience, University of Chicago, 5841 S. Maryland Avenue, Chicago, IL 60637, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Little is known about acute subjective and physiological responses to alcohol in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD), particularly as it pertains to the spectrum of AUD severity. This study examined acute biphasic alcohol response phenotypes in participants with mild, moderate, and severe AUD.

Methods: Study data was from the third cohort of the Chicago Social Drinking Project (N = 101, 50 % male; M age=27.

Developing a downstream purification process for replication-competent enveloped virus particles presents a significant challenge. This is largely due to the highly complex particle structures, as well as complexities of emerging purification modalities for such virus particles. In this study, an unexpected fluid-dynamic effect was observed during the elution of enveloped virus particles from an ion exchange chromatography monolith.

The efficient removal of CO from exhaust streams and even directly from air is necessary to forestall climate change, lending urgency to the search for new materials that can rapidly capture CO at high capacity. The recent discovery that diamine-appended metal-organic frameworks can exhibit cooperative CO uptake via the formation of ammonium carbamate chains begs the question of whether simple organic polyamine molecules could be designed to achieve a similar switch-like behavior with even higher separation capacities. Here, we present a solid molecular triamine, 1,3,5-tris(aminomethyl)benzene (TriH), that rapidly captures large quantities of CO upon exposure to humid air to form the porous, crystalline, ammonium carbamate network solid TriH(CO)·HO (TriHCO).
