DNA methylation is a key epigenetic mark found in both eukaryotic as well as prokaryotic genomes. It is essential for regulating expression of genes and preservation of genomic integrity. Both plants and animals possess specific proteins that mediate biological effects of DNA methylation. Many families of such methylated DNA binding proteins have been discovered in plants; the most prominent of them being the methyl-CpG- binding domain (MBD) proteins. Some of the MBD proteins have the ability to recognize methylated CpGs in vitro and in vivo. In this review, we have described MBD proteins and their functions in a wide range of cellular processes in various plant species. We have also outlined their mechanism of action and interacting protein partners.

Unidirectional recruitment between MeCP2 and KSHV-encoded LANA revealed by CRISPR/Cas9 recruitment assay.

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV, HHV-8) is associated with several human malignancies. During latency, the viral genomes reside in the nucleus of infected cells as large non-integrated plasmids, known as episomes. To ensure episome maintenance, the latency protein LANA tethers the viral episomes to the cell chromosomes during cell division.

Calciprotein particles (CPPs) are blood-borne circulating nanoparticles composed of calcium phosphate and proteins that are known to exacerbate pathological processes such as chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD). Despite the significant interest in CKD-MBD pathogenesis, research directly addressing CPP-induced fibrosis in renal proximal tubules is rare, largely owing to the lack of suitable in vitro tissue models. Our study confirmed that 3D-cultured renal proximal tubule epithelial cells (PTECs) exhibited enhanced pathological characteristics compared to 2D-cultured PTECs when treated with CPPs, a key factor in CKD-MBD, and the uremic toxin.

Background: We investigated how cerebrospinal fluid levels of synaptic proteins associate with memory function in normal cognition (CN) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and investigated the effect of amyloid positivity on these associations.

Methods: We included 242 CN (105(43%) abnormal amyloid), and 278 MCI individuals (183(66%) abnormal amyloid) from the European Medical Information Framework for Alzheimer's Disease Multimodal Biomarker Discovery (EMIF-AD MBD) and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). For 181 (EMIF-AD MBD) and 36 (ADNI) proteins with a synaptic annotation in SynGO, associations with word learning recall were analysed with linear models.

Synbiotics as a novel therapeutic approach for hyperphosphatemia and hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease rats.

Metabolic Disease in Gastrointestinal and Urinary System Research Unit, Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, 10330, Thailand.

Hyperphosphatemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) are the common complications found in CKD that lead to severe complications including mineral bone disease (MBD), vascular calcification (VC), and cardiovascular mortality. To mitigate hyperphosphatemia, SHPT and uremic toxemia, we supplemented cisplatin-induced CKD rats with a synbiotic composed of Lactobacillus salivarius LBR228, Bifidobacterium longum BFS309, fructo-oligosaccharide and chitosan oligosaccharide, with Lactobacillus casei as a standard probiotic control. After the 12 weeks experiment, rats supplemented with the synbiotic had lower serum phosphate, calcium-phosphorus product, serum parathyroid hormone, and indoxyl sulfate levels than untreated rats.
