Morphological Changes in Rectus Abdominis Muscle Associated With Pregnancy and Abdominoplasty.

Published: March 2025

Background: Pregnancy can alter the rectus abdominis, which abdominoplasty can potentially correct.

Objectives: This study aims to examine these muscle changes during pregnancy and evaluate how effectively abdominoplasty with double folds of the rectus abdominis tightens the muscle.

Methods: We collected clinical data from nulliparous and pregnant patients who had abdominoplasty with double folds of the rectus abdominis. We measured the linea alba width, rectus abdominis width and thickness, its cross-sectional area, and abdominal circumference. Postoperative complications were also recorded. The assessment of satisfaction with the morphology of the rectus abdominis, both pre- and post-surgery, was conducted using a 5-point Likert scale.

Results: The study included 400 women: 171 nulliparous, 106 with one pregnancy (group 1), and 123 with two or more pregnancies (group 2). Complete postoperative data were available for 32 patients (group 3). Significant widening of the linea alba was found in group 1 and group 2. The rectus abdominis width increased significantly in group 1 but not in group 2. Its thickness remained unchanged in group 1 but decreased in group 2, mirroring the pattern of its cross-sectional area. In group 3, both the linea alba and rectus abdominis width decreased, while thickness and cross-sectional area increased. Post-surgery satisfaction with muscle morphology improved significantly, with no serious complications reported.

Conclusions: Pregnancy can cause the rectus abdominis muscle to separate, widening the linea alba and flattening the muscle. Abdominoplasty, which reinforces the muscle with double folds, effectively resolves this, resulting in high patient satisfaction and few complications.

Athletic pubalgia is a relatively uncommon injury that is not fully understood. There are few high-level studies comparing treatments of athletic pubalgia, and this investigation seeks to utilize original articles to compare two common techniques for treatment of athletic pubalgia. The purpose of this study is to compare two prominent procedures, i.

Diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) is an acquired condition defined by a widening of the linea alba exceeding 2 cm and the subsequent separation between the two medial margins of the rectus muscles, accompanied by a laxity of the ventral abdominal muscles, and often by ventral midline hernias. It is a quite common problem in women after pregnancy. In addition to the aesthetic implications resulting from the swelling of the anterior abdominal wall in the case of increased pressure within the abdominal cavity, DRA leads to several physical functional disorders, including muscle weakness, prolapses of the pelvic organs, urinary and fecal incontinence, low back and pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction.

Introduction: The postpartum period involves significant biomechanical changes that impact maternal health, particularly in the activation of the transversus abdominis (TrA) and the inter-recti distance (IRD), which may contribute to lumbo-pelvic pathologies. While lumbopelvic exercises are beneficial, it remains unclear whether upper or lower limb adduction combined with forced expiration is more effective in activating the TrA. Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to analyze changes in TrA thickness and IRD during four conditions.

Background: Effective management of postoperative analgesia following laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is critical to ensure optimal patient comfort and recovery. This study evaluates the effects of erector spinae plane block (ESPB) and rectus sheath block (RSB) on opioid consumption to determine non-inferiority.

Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 44 patients aged 18 to 75 years who underwent LC at our hospital between December 2022 and March 2023, with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) scores of I-II.
