Millions of Americans affected by Long COVID (LC) report difficulty accessing care and support. One barrier is obtaining a diagnosis. In response, US federal agencies commissioned a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) committee to re-examine the existing federal definitions for LC. The Committee concluded that LC is "an infection-associated chronic condition (IACC) occurring after SARS-CoV-2 infection that is present for at least 3 months as a continuous, relapsing and remitting, or progressive disease state that can present as singular or multiple symptoms and/or diagnosable conditions." The full report was released in June 2024. We briefly highlight features and aspects of the definition that may help clinicians identify those who remain undiagnosed and improve care for all LC patients.

Position-dependent resource competition within inflorescences of Sagittaria trifolia.

Plant Biol (Stuttg)

March 2025

Key Laboratory of Aquatic Botany and Watershed Ecology, Wuhan Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan, China.

Resource competition among flowers is expected to influence variation in seed output within inflorescences, but the extent to which flower position affects competitive interactions is still incompletely understood. To investigate position effects on seed output in the perennial, monoecious macrophyte Sagittaria trifolia, we compared components of seed production (fruit set, seed number per fruit, and seed size) in control inflorescences to that in inflorescences from which half of the female flowers were experimentally removed, either from basal positions, from upper positions, or from across the inflorescence. Basal and upper flower removal reduced total seed output per inflorescence, while the throughout removal treatment maintained a seed yield comparable to the control.

Background: The few reported patients with pathogenic IRF8 variants have manifested 2 distinct phenotypes: (1) an autosomal recessive severe immunodeficiency with significant neutrophilia and absence of or significant decrease in monocytes and dendritic cells and (2) a dominant-negative form with only a decrease in conventional type 2 dendritic cells (cDC2s) and susceptibility to mycobacterial disease.

Objectives: Genetic testing of a child with persistent EBV viremia identified a novel IRF8 variant: c.1279dupT (p.

Background: The management of high-surgical risk patients with moderate to severe acute cholecystitis is challenging in clinical practice. Early laparoscopic cholecystectomy is considered the gold standard for patients who do not respond to conservative treatment. However, for those unfit for surgery due to high-surgical risk, alternative treatment options such as percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) are available.

Pressure-Induced Phase Transitions in Bismutotantalite (BiTaO): Insights from Single-Crystal Diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy.

Inorg Chem

March 2025

Key Laboratory of High-Temperature and High-Pressure Study of the Earth's Interior, Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guiyang, Guizhou 550081, China.

In situ high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analyses were performed on a natural bismutotantalite with an α-BiTaO structure. The results indicate that α-BiTaO transforms into an orthorhombic phase (HP γ-BiTaO), likely through an intermediate orthorhombic phase (HP β-BiTaO). The transition pressures are 11.

Hybrid multicompartment artificial architectures, inherited from different compartmental systems, possess separate microenvironments that can perform different functions. Herein, a hybrid compartmentalized architecture via hybridizing ferritin nanocage (Fn) with non-aqueous droplets using aminated-modified amphiphilic gelatin (AGEL) is proposed, which enables the generation of compartmentalized emulsions with hybrid multicompartments. The resulting compartmentalized emulsions are termed "hybrasome".
