Published: January 2025

Unlabelled: We present a rare case of Radiation-induced sarcoma in the thyroid, in a 53-year-old female, seven years after receiving chemoradiation for SCC esophagus. The disease was non resectable due to carotid encasement and was therefore planned for chemotherapy with doxorubicin.

PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS) is associated with increased lifetime risks of breast, thyroid, kidney, endometrial, and colorectal cancers, as well as melanoma (collectively, component cancers). We sought to characterize non-component cancers (NCC) in PHTS. Of 701 research participants with PHTS, 340 (49%) had cancer, with 101 (30%) having at least one NCC.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common form of well-differentiated thyroid cancer (WDTC) and generally has a favorable prognosis. However, subsets of these tumors can metastasize, leading to aggressive disease progression and poorer clinical outcomes. Radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy is routinely given in the adjuvant setting following thyroidectomy and lymph node dissection for WDTC.
