Published: December 2024

Introduction: This study compares the efficacy of orthopantomography (OPG), conebeam computed tomography (CBCT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in diagnosing the alveolar antral artery (AAA) within the maxillary sinus.

Materials And Methods: Conducted among 297 patients in Odisha, with ages ranging from 20 to 50 years, the study utilized three observers to ensure reliability. Results indicated that MRI is the gold standard for AAA visualization, with high intraand interobserver reliability (Cohen's kappa = 1.0).

Results: OPG offers minimal radiation exposure and CBCT provides detailed 3D bone imaging, MRI excels in soft tissue contrast without radiation, proving essential for accurate diagnosis and surgical planning.

Aim The purpose of this study was to evaluate alveolar height at the antral floor following dental implant placement after an indirect sinus lift using osseodensification (OD) with the HaeNaem bur system. Materials and methods A total of 12 patients seeking implant rehabilitation in the maxillary posterior region were selected for the study. Preoperative cone beam CT (CBCT) was performed to measure the residual crestal bone height (RCBH).

The Impact of Sinus Anatomy on Early Implant Failure Following Sinus Augmentation: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, The Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how the anatomy of the maxillary sinus relates to early implant failure (EIF) after sinus augmentation for dental implants.
  • A retrospective analysis of 159 sinus augmentations found that thicker lateral walls and more bony septa reduced the likelihood of EIF, while smokers had a higher risk.
  • The findings highlight the importance of detailed preoperative imaging to improve the success of sinus augmentation procedures.

Aim: This study aims to evaluate the anatomical variations of the maxillary sinus and determine the difficulty score of maxillary sinus augmentation (MSA) in Saudi patients seeking dental implant rehabilitation of the posterior maxilla using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Methodology: CBCT records of dental patients seeking treatment at a University Dental Teaching Hospital between 2019 and 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Measurements were obtained from CBCT images, including membrane thickness, sinus width, buccal bone thickness, presence of maxillary sinus septa, residual alveolar ridge height, angle of the buccolingual sinus wall, and the presence of the alveolar antral artery (AAA).

Background: Maxillary sinuses may present a wide spectrum of anatomical variations and pathological lesions whose recognition is mandatory for the clinician, especially prior to any surgical intervention in the area, such as in cases of sinus floor elevation. The goal of this study was the evaluation, mapping and prevalence of sinus anatomical variants and pathoses in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scans of dental patients.

Material And Methods: 660 CBCT examinations of adult patients involving both sinuses were obtained (between 2017 and 2023) and analyzed.
