Invasive bacterial infections are frequent causes of hospitalization among people who use opioids. We evaluated the association between inpatient administration of medication for opioid use disorder with one-year all-cause mortality in patients hospitalized with invasive bacterial infections.

This study examined the relationship between teat canal score (TCS), somatic cell count (SCC), pathogen infection, and milk antimicrobial components in each quarter of milking cows. A total of 110 quarters of 28 healthy Holstein milking cows were used for the TCS and collection of milk samples. Milk samples were analyzed for SCC, antimicrobial components (S100A7 and lingual antimicrobial peptide (LAP)), and acute phase protein (serum amyloid A (SAA)).

This study aimed to evaluate the virulence characteristics of ST11 Salmonella enterica from various sources and explore its pathogenic mechanisms and the molecular basis of antimicrobial resistance. In total, 20 Salmonella isolates collected between 2017 and 2022 from environmental, animal, clinical, and food sources were analyzed. Comprehensive investigations were conducted using whole-genome sequencing, bioinformatic analysis, broth microdilution methods, a two-dimensional (2D) cell model (Caco-2 cells), and a Galleria mellonella infection model.

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by Mucorales fungi that cause severe disease and fatality, especially in immunocompromised individuals. Although vaccines and immunotherapeutics have been successful in combating viral and bacterial infections, approved antifungal immunotherapies are yet to be realized. To address this gap, monoclonal antibodies targeting invasive fungal infections have emerged as a promising approach, particularly for immunocompromised patients who are unlikely to maximally benefit from vaccines.

Invasive infections by encapsulated bacteria are the major cause of human morbidity and mortality. The liver resident macrophages, Kupffer cells, form the hepatic firewall to clear many encapsulated bacteria in the blood circulation but fail to control certain high-virulence capsule types. Here we report that the spleen is the backup immune organ to clear the liver-resistant serotypes of (pneumococcus), a leading human pathogen.
