Prenatal and postnatal Zika virus (ZIKV) exposure can result in a constellation of developmental deficits in human infants that present during early childhood. Translational rhesus macaques models have been developed to interrogate these deficits. Here, we summarize and interpret the developmental findings from rhesus macaque studies of prenatal or postnatal ZIKV exposure. We looked for potential biomarkers that could be used to identify infants at risk for developmental deficits. Visual orientation and motor deficits were the most common developmental deficits across the studies. We identified a potential association between prolonged maternal RNAemia and worse infant developmental outcomes in prenatal exposure studies. Therefore, longitudinal screening of maternal blood for ZIKV RNA may help identify human infants at risk for visual orientation and motor deficits in early childhood; however, the diversity of research protocols across the groups made it challenging to make definitive associations.

A New Method Using the Four-Chamber View to Identify Fetuses With Subsequently Confirmed Postnatal Aortic Coarctation.

Echocardiography

March 2025

Division of Pediatric Cardiology, Department of Pediatrics, UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Objective: To determine the sensitivity, specificity, and false-positive rate among fetuses suspected prenatally to have coarctation of the aorta (CoA) using size and shape measurements of the fetal heart from the four-chamber view (4CV).

Methods: This was a retrospective study of 108 fetuses identified by pediatric cardiologists to be at risk for CoA. 4CV s from the last antenatal ultrasound performed by the cardiologists were analyzed.

Food allergy has had a rapid rise in prevalence, and thus it is important to identify approaches to limit the development of food allergy early in life. Because maternal dietary supplementation with α-tocopherol (α-T), an isoform of vitamin E, during pregnancy and nursing increases neonate plasma levels of α-T and can limit neonate development of other allergies, we hypothesized that α-T can limit development of food allergy. To assess this, male mice with mutations in their skin barrier genes (FT-/- mice) were mated with wild-type females that received a diet supplemented with α-tocopherol or a control diet.

Aims: This study reports on the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of prenatal and postnatal couples-focused telephone counseling for pregnant tobacco smokers.

Design And Setting: This pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted online in Romania and enrolled a total of 90 pregnant smokers and 77 of their life partners.

Participants: 90 adult pregnant smokers and 77 of their life partners were randomized either to (1) Motivation and Problem Solving (MAPS) telephone counseling (n = 45 pregnant smokers who received up to 8 pre/postnatal telephone counseling sessions and n = 40 partners who received up to 4 sessions) or (2) usual care (n = 45 pregnant smokers and n = 37 partners).
