The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta) is an expansive river delta supplying a large portion of California's fresh water for agriculture and residential use, and it is also an area of critical habitat for numerous state and federally listed species of concern. In many locations, urban stormwater flows directly into the Delta. 6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q), an ozonation byproduct of a tire antiozonant 6PPD, has been shown to enter surface water via these pathways and can cause various toxicological effects, including acute urban mortality syndrome to coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) at low levels (LC = 41 and 95 ng/L for juveniles and adults, respectively). Here, we quantified 6PPD-Q in 61 archived Delta water extracts collected between 2018 and 2024 and found concentrations up to 21 ng/L. Currently, no 6PPD-Q presence and/or quantitative data is available for this complex and diverse ecosystem. Little is known regarding long-term storage of 6PPD-quinone in solvent extracts, so 6PPD-Q observations document its presence in the study area and provide evidence that further sampling may be warranted to better quantify environmental concentrations. Consistent with the general understanding of 6PPD-Q transport, all detections observed were in samples collected during or immediately after a precipitation event. This work provides environmentally relevant concentration data to complement ongoing toxicological investigations of 6PPD-Q in Delta organisms and suggests there are research opportunities for a more robust survey of 6PPD-Q inputs into the Delta.

AlGaN-based ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) experience a notable reduction in efficiency within the 280-330 nm wavelength range, known as the "UVB gap". Given the extensive applications of UV LEDs in this wavelength range, it is imperative to bridge this efficiency gap. In this study, a strategy facilitated by the presence of residual Al adatoms is introduced to simultaneously improve the integration of Ga-adatoms and the migration of Al/Ga-adatoms during the growth of low-Al-composition AlGaN quantum wells (QWs) even at high temperatures comparable to those used for high-Al-composition AlGaN quantum barriers.

Transition metal selenides (TMSe) are promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts but act as precursors rather than the actual active phase, transforming into amorphous oxyhydroxides during OER. This transformation, along with the formation of selenium oxyanions and unstable heterointerfaces, complicates the structure-activity relationship and reduces stability. This work introduces novel "layered-hierarchical dual lattice strain engineering" to inhibit the surface reconstruction of NiSe by modulating both the nickel foam (NF) substrate with MoN nanosheets (NM) and the NiSe nanorods-nanosheets catalytic layer (NiSe-NiSe-NiO, NSN) with ultrafast interfacial bimetallic amorphous NiFeOOH coating, achieving the optimized NM/NSN/NiFeOOH configuration.

Activated by the Li-O-Li configuration with nonbonding O2p state (lO2p), anionic redox reaction (ARR) in Li-rich layered oxides (LLOs) contributes to additional capacity but exhibits significant irreversibility, leading to severe surface oxygen loss. Herein, surface nonbonding oxygen state (SNBOS) is regulated by the integrated surface structure engineering to suppress surface oxygen loss and enhance the reversibility of ARR. On the outermost layer, the conversion of layered structure into a LiLaO2 layer and spinel phase structure eliminates lO2p, thereby preventing the activation of ARR and suppressing side reaction between electrolyte and oxidized oxygen ions.

Monitoring Arctic marine mammals in response to rapid climate change requires reliable longitudinal data. To obtain such data is challenging, but sequential measurements of stable isotopes (SI) from metabolically inert tissues like dentine allow for chronological reconstruction of SI data that can provide insights into whale life history, behaviour and physiology. This study examined dentine samples from narwhal embedded canines to reconstruct individual SI profiles and assess intra-annual variation in δN and δC.
