Recent advances in functional genomics have allowed identification of thousands of translated short open reading frames (sORFs) in the 5' leaders of mammalian mRNA transcripts. While most sORFs are unlikely to encode functional proteins, a small number have been shown to have evolved as protein-coding genes. As a result, dozens of these sORFs have already been annotated as protein-coding ORFs. mRNAs that contain both a protein-coding sORF and an annotated coding sequence (CDS) are referred to as bicistronic transcripts. In this study, we focus on three genes - , , and - which give rise to bicistronic mRNAs. We discuss recent findings regarding functional investigation of the corresponding polypeptide products, as well as how their translation is regulated, and how this unusual genetic arrangement may have evolved.

Joubert syndrome (JS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder associated with mutations in genes involved in ciliary function. Germline variants in CPLANE1 have been implicated in JS. In this study, we investigated a family with three adverse pregnancies characterised by fetal malformations consistent with JS.

Objectives: With the aging population, the incidence of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is increasing every year. The pathogenesis of IDD is complex, and there are currently no effective treatment options. This study aims to investigate the specific function and underlying mechanism of zinc finger protein 667 (ZNF667) in the inflammatory damage of nucleus pulposus cells in IDD.

Objectives: Small interfering RNA (siRNA) can silence disease-related genes through sequence-specific RNA interference (RNAi). Cationic lipid-based liposomes effectively deliver nucleic acids into the cytoplasm but often exhibit significant toxicity. This study aims to synthesize a novel ionizable lipid, Nε-laruoyl-lysine amide (LKA), from natural amino acids, constructed LKA-based liposomes, and perform physicochemical characterization and cell-based experiments to systematically evaluate the potential of these ionizable lipid-based liposomes for nucleic acid delivery.

Salmonid fishes are well adapted to transition between salinities as part of a diadromid lifestyle, and many species are both economically and environmentally important. Ion-transporting gill epithelium helps fishes maintain ion balance during salinity transition. Recent transcriptomic surveys suggest that voltage-gated ion channels (VGICs) are present in gill epithelium of fishes.

MicroRNAs are endogenous non-coding small RNAs composed of about 22 nucleotides, which are widely found in eukaryotic cells and regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level through complementary pairing with target genes, leading to mRNA degradation or translation inhibition. miR-34 is a highly conserved miRNA during evolution. Recent studies have found that members of the miR-34 family are involved in regulating biological processes such as aging, ciliogenesis, and immunity.
