Objective: To assess students' knowledge, confidence and performance documenting interventions utilizing the Pharmacist Electronic Care Plan (PeCP) within self-care courses at two institutions.
Methods: Two institutions collaborated to develop a multi-part self-care electronic care (eCare) planning activity. The activity included a (1) lecture on the PeCP, (2) video on how to document within PioneerRx (pharmacy documentation software), (3) small group classroom practice, and (4) individual graded assignment. Students' knowledge and confidence were assessed with a pre- and post-activity survey, while their performance on documentation was assessed via analysis of the graded individual assignment. Survey responses and individual assignment grades were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test assessed changes in skill responses in pre- and post-activity surveys. McNemar's and Bowker's tests were used to evaluate changes in response proportions, with Bonferroni correction applied for multiple comparisons.
Results: Matched pre- and post-activity surveys were collected from 76 students between the institutions. There was a statistically significant increase in two of five knowledge-based questions, as well as in students' confidence regarding all eight essential components of the PeCP. The average score on the individual eCare plan assignment was 93.9% (n=157).
Conclusion: This study describes a potential strategy to incorporate the PeCP into a required didactic course. This expands students' exposure to digital health, which is supported by the Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education Standards 2025. Furthermore, it provides the students' knowledge and skills to serve as change agents in community pharmacy practice transformation.
