Published: March 2025

Two new cyclopentanoid monoterpenes, catalpovatins A-B (-), together with nine known compounds (-), were isolated from the fruits of G. Don. The structures of these compounds were elucidated based on their spectroscopic data. All isolated compounds were evaluated for cytotoxicity against six human tumor cell lines, hepatoprotective activity and anti-inflammatory activity.

Ten new cyclopentanoid monoterpenes (1-10) were isolated from the whole plant of Rehmannia piasezkii. The structures of these compounds were elucidated based on spectroscopic data analysis. In in-vitro assays, compounds 3, 7, and 9 exhibited weak hepatoprotective activities against APAP-induced HepG2 cell damage.

Iridoids are a special class of cyclopentanoid monoterpenes, which exhibit a wide range of biological effects. The present study aimed to investigate the potential effects of three iridoids genipin, geniposide and geniposidic acid on three human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines HSC-2, SCC-9 and A253 in addition to studying the possible underlying mechanisms. Cell viability assay revealed that geniposide treatment significantly suppressed the proliferation of all three cancer cell lines.

Iridoid monoterpenes, widely distributed in plants and insects, have many ecological functions. While the biosynthesis of iridoids has been extensively studied in plants, little is known about how insects synthesize these natural products. Here, we elucidated the biosynthesis of the iridoids -nepetalactol and -nepetalactone in the pea aphid (Harris), where they act as sex pheromones.
