The Mondego Estuary (W Portugal) experienced a process of eutrophication in the late 20 century, making it one of the most impacted systems in southern Europe. To examine its recent environmental evolution, sedimentary records were analyzed from a multiproxy approach, involving biotic, sedimentological, geochemical, physical, and radionuclide data. Results evidenced the transformation of the estuary due to anthropogenic cumulative impacts. The closure of the upstream branch triggered rapid 'continentalization' in the southern arm, altering the hydrosedimentary regime and favoring eutrophication. However, the middle and lower sectors exhibited stronger marine influences. Foraminiferal biota responded effectively to management interventions to improve hydrodynamics, while showing no discernible ecotoxicological responses to agricultural discharges. Pesticide accumulations patterns are shaped by natural and anthropogenic factors, with strong agrochemical fingerprints in the upper and lower sectors. The topmost 20-cm layer of sediments contain high pesticide concentrations and microplastics, posing challenges for future management and pollutant mitigation.

This study explores how varying chlorogenic acid levels (low-yellowish, Y; high-greenish, G) in sunflower proteins (SFs) affect the properties of eugenol-loaded oil-in-water emulsions and the resulting films, while examining the interaction of cellulose nanoparticles (from commercial (CNC) and banana peel sources (CNF)) with the film-forming matrix. This research fills gaps in literature by demonstrating how interactions among proteins, lipids, phenolic compounds, and cellulose nanoparticles influence film properties. The high chlorogenic acid content in SF reduced electrostatic repulsion between protein molecules, causing aggregation, oil droplet flocculation, and increased emulsion viscosity.

Mullite, 3AlO·2SiO, is a material with excellent thermal and mechanical properties. Two types of waste sand, rich in impurities, were employed as precursors for mullite ceramic synthesis. Two different synthesis routes were used: (i) solid-state reactions involving a sand and bauxite mixture, and (ii) precipitation synthesis, where alumina was deposited on sand particle surfaces; the sintering process was performed at temperatures ranging from 1300 °C to 1400 °C.
