Salivary Metabolomics as a Diagnostic Tool: Distinct Metabolic Profiles Across Orofacial Pain Subtypes.

Int J Mol Sci

March 2025

Department of Oral Medicine, Sedation and Imaging, Hadassah Medical Center, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, P.O. Box 12272, Jerusalem 91120, Israel.

Orofacial pain (OFP) includes chronic pain conditions categorized into musculoskeletal (MS), neurovascular (NV), and neuropathic (NP) pain types, encompassing temporomandibular disorders (TMD), migraines, trigeminal neuralgia (TN), post-traumatic neuropathies, and burning mouth syndrome (BMS). These conditions significantly affect quality of life; yet, their underlying metabolic disruptions remain inadequately explored. Salivary metabolomics provides a non-invasive method to investigate biochemical alterations associated with OFP subtypes.

DNA Salivary Methylation Levels of the ACE2 Promoter Are Not Related to ACE2 ( and ), TMPRSS2 ( and ) and ACE1 Polymorphisms in COVID-19 Survivors with Post-COVID-19 Condition.

Int J Mol Sci

February 2025

Center for Neuroplasticity and Pain (CNAP), Sensory-Motor Interaction (SMI) Center, Department of Health Science and Technology, Faculty of Medicine, Aalborg University, DK-9220 Aalborg, Denmark.

Genetics and epigenetics are mechanisms proposed for explaining post-COVID-19 condition. This secondary analysis aimed to investigate if DNA methylation levels of the ACE2 promoter are different depending on the genotype of five COVID-19-related polymorphisms in individuals who had been previously hospitalized due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. We collected non-stimulated saliva samples from 279 (48.

: With around 25 different salivary gland tumor entities described by the World Health Organization, the correct preoperative identification of masses as benign or malignant remains a challenge. If preoperative needle biopsy is inconclusive, frozen section analysis is a possible alternative for accurate histological identification. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic effectiveness of frozen section performed for primary submandibular gland masses.

Loss of epithelial cell polarity and tissue disorganization are hallmarks of carcinogenesis, in which Ca signaling plays a significant role. Here we demonstrate that the plasma membrane Ca pump PMCA4 (ATP2B4) is downregulated in luminal breast cancer, and this is associated with shorter relapse-free survival in patients with luminal A and B1 subtype tumors. Using the MCF-7 breast cancer cell model we show that PMCA4 silencing results in the loss of cell polarity while a forced increase in PMCA4b expression induces cell polarization and promotes lumen formation.

The microbiota-gut-brain axis is a complex communication system that plays a crucial role in influencing various aspects of our physical and mental health. The goal of this study was to determine the extent to which individual differences in resting measures of vagally-mediated heart rate variability (HRV) and cortisol levels were associated with psychometric and specific gut microbiota characteristics in seventy-five (38 females) healthy individuals. Participants were assessed for vagally-mediated HRV, daily salivary cortisol levels, psychometric characteristics, and gut microbiota composition.
