Seven previously undescribed heterodimers (1-7) with unusual carbon-carbon bond linkages for monomeric meroterpenoids and a known compound (8) were isolated from the roots of Arnebia euchroma (Royle) Johnst. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods and quantum chemical calculations of electronic circular dichroism spectra. Further careful NMR analysis revealed that the chemical shift differences of the methylene protons affected by remote chirality were related to the relative configurations of the heterodimers (1-6). Compounds 2-5 and 8 significantly ameliorated PC12 cell damage induced by HO and glutamate in vitro comparable to edaravone.

(Royle) Johnst. has high medicinal and economic value, but in recent years, wild resources of this species have been depleted and the quality of artificially cultivated has been poor. The endophyte community of medicinal plants is rich, serving as an internal resource that promotes the growth of medicinal plants and the accumulation of secondary metabolites, and has important potential application value in improving the quality of medicinal materials.

The rising prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-positive bacteria threatens the effectiveness of current antibiotic therapies. However, the development of new antibiotics has stagnated in recent years, highlighted the critical need for the discovery of innovative antimicrobial agents. This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity of naphthoquinones derived from Arnebia euchroma (Royle) Johnst (ADNs) and elucidate their underlying mechanisms.

Electronic address:

Background: Arnebiae Radix has long been used in traditional medicine for its pleiotropic properties. However, distinguishing Arnebiae Radix from its substitutes or closely related species has been challenging due to limited phenotypic characteristics.

Purpose: We aimed to identify the molecular markers for distinguishing Arnebiae Radix from its confusion species.
