Wearable noninvasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), have experienced significant progress since their inception. However, these technologies have not achieved revolutionary advancements, largely because of their inherently low signal-to-noise ratio and limited penetration depth. In recent years, the application of quantum-theory-based optically pumped (OP) technologies, particularly optical pumped magnetometers (OPMs) for magnetoencephalography (MEG) and photoacoustic imaging (PAI) utilizing OP pulsed laser sources, has opened new avenues for development in noninvasive BCIs. These advanced technologies have garnered considerable attention owing to their high sensitivity in tracking neural activity and detecting blood oxygen saturation. This paper represents the first attempt to discuss and compare technologies grounded in OP theory by examining the technical advantages of OPM-MEG and PAI over traditional EEG and fNIRS. Furthermore, the paper investigates the theoretical and structural feasibility of hardware reuse in OPM-MEG and PAI applications.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common musculoskeletal disease globally and is the main reason for the chronic pain and disability in people over sixty-five worldwide. Degradation of the articular cartilage, synovial inflammation and osteophyte formation are widely acknowledged as the primary pathological manifestations of OA. OA affects more than 300 million people all over the world, bringing extremely large socioeconomic burden.

Near-infrared II (NIR-II) photoacoustic (PA)/photothermal imaging-guided tumor therapy holds great promise in precision medicine for cancer treatment. This work reports on the synthesis and application of an organic small molecule nanoagent that has exceptional PA and photothermal properties in the near-infrared region. BCy-TPE was constructed by linking an NIR-II absorbing cyanine dye BCy-Cl with a twisted tetraphenylethene unit.

The development of small molecular dyes excitable in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000~1700 nm) is crucial for deep-tissue penetration and maximum permissible exposure in cancer photothermal theranostics. Herein, we employed a dendrimer engineering strategy to develop the boron difluoride formazanate (BDF) dye BDF-8OMe for photoacoustic imaging-mediated NIR-II photothermal therapy. BDF-8OMe, characterized by an increased molecular branching degree and extended π-conjugation, exhibited broad absorbance peaked at 905 nm, with the absorption tail extending to 1300 nm.

Growing evidence suggests a close link between acute kidney injury (AKI) and disruptions in renal microcirculation. However, current non-invasive tools for quantitatively monitoring structural and functional changes in renal microcirculation remain limited, making early diagnosis difficult. To address this challenge, this work introduces a label-free 3D multi-parametric imaging technique that combines photoacoustic and super-resolution ultrasound imaging.

Metal complexes have long played a pivotal role in analytical chemistry due to their ability to detect and separate ions through the synergistic interaction between metal centers and ligands. This functionality can be further enhanced by integrating metal complexes non-covalently with various media, such as materials or separation platforms. Over the past four decades, the author has explored metal complex systems, including thiacalixarene-lanthanide(III) complexes, diradical platinum(II) complexes, and MOF-74, which exhibit a broad spectrum of functionalities spanning analytical applications to theranostics.
