Design Parameters Affecting the Performance of Vortex-Induced Vibration Harvesters.

Published: January 2025

Vortex-induced vibration harvesters are usually equipped with small piezoelectric patches mounted near the cantilever clamp, where the largest longitudinal stress occurs. This paper, aiming to improve energy harvesting performance, investigates the possibilities of extending the patch length and modifying the length and mass of a bluff body mounted on a harvester to induce vortex shedding. A novel analytical model based on dimensionless numbers is presented to determine the output voltage generated by a cantilever harvester subjected to periodic vortex shedding. This model highlights the design parameters having the largest influence on harvester performance and provides guidance to the planning of experimental tests and the interpretation of experimental results. Some prototype harvesters with different designs are built. First, experimental tests are carried out to identify the natural frequencies and damping ratios of the prototypes; then, the prototypes are tested in a wind tunnel to assess energy harvesting performance. The best performance is achieved when the patch length is about 20% of the cantilever length, the bluff body is long, and its mass reaches the minimum value. This result agrees with the prediction of the model.

Biological structures provide inspiration for developing advanced materials from sustainable resources, enabling passive structural morphing. Despite an increasing interest for parsimony-oriented innovation, sustainable shape-changing materials based on renewable resources remain underexplored. In this work, the architecture of a single plant fiber cell wall (S, for instance) is simplified to design novel concepts of 4D printed tubular moisture-driven structural actuators, using the hygromorphic properties of continuous flax fiber (cFF) reinforced materials.

Controllable Hydrothermal Synthesis of 1D β-GaO for Solar-Blind Ultraviolet Photodetection.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

March 2025

State Key Laboratory of Digital Medical Engineering, School of Electronic Science and Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing 210096, China.

Gallium oxide (GaO), an ultrawide bandgap semiconductor, is an ideal material for solar-blind photodetectors, but challenges such as low responsivity and response speed persist. In this paper, one-dimensional (1D) GaO nanorods were designed to achieve high photodetection performance due to their effective light absorption and light field confinement. Through modulating source concentration, pH value, temperature, and reaction time, 1D β-GaO nanorods were controllably fabricated using a cost-effective hydrothermal method, followed by post-annealing.

Harnessing Magnetic Properties for Precision Thermal Control of Vortex Domain Walls in Constricted Nanowires.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

February 2025

Department of Basic and Applied Sciences, A'Sharqiyah University, P.O. Box 42, Ibra 400, Oman.

This study investigates the thermal pinning and depinning behaviors of vortex domain walls (VWs) in constricted magnetic nanowires, focusing on the influence of intrinsic magnetic properties on VW stability under thermal stress. Using micromagnetic simulations, we analyze the roles of saturation magnetization (Ms), uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (Ku), and nanowire geometry in determining VW thermal stability. The modeled nanowire has dimensions of 200 nm (width), 30 nm (thickness), and a 50 nm constriction length, chosen based on the dependence of VW formation on nanowire geometry.

One-Step Solvothermal Synthesis of FeO Acicular Aggregates Induced by Reaction Medium and Urea for Photocatalytic Degradation of Azo Dyes.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

February 2025

College of Materials Science and Engineering, National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys, Chongqing University, Chongqing 400044, China.

Based on the magnetic sensitivity of FeO in various fields, we aimed to propose a one-step solvothermal process for the synthesis of single-phase FeO induced by the reaction medium and urea, avoiding high-temperature reduction in H or N atmospheres. Feasibility was tested with purified water (HO), methyl alcohol (MA), ethyl alcohol (EA), and ethylene glycol (EG) as reaction media. The findings indicated that the solvothermal reaction system utilizing EA was more effective for the synthesis of cubic magnetic FeO.
