Botulism is a potentially deadly neuroparalytic disease that affects all age groups; it is highly challenging to diagnose due to its nonspecific symptoms. Infant botulism is the most common form of botulism in the United States, followed by foodborne and wound botulism. Since most patients require hospitalization, it is imperative that both adult and pediatric physicians recognize its symptoms. Patients with severe forms of botulism typically present early after toxin ingestion and progress rapidly. Although rare in the United States, botulism remains a public health concern since even one case may predict an outbreak. This review summarizes the typical clinical course of botulism and recommendations for diagnosis and management.

Results: This study examined samples from a clustered food poisoning incident, including pickled pig liver consumed by three patients, hospital vomit from a deceased patient, and household waste mixed with vomit.

Botulinum neurotoxins are synthetized by anaerobic, spore-forming bacteria that inhibit acetylcholine release at the level of the neuromuscular and autonomic cholinergic junctions, thus inducing a series of symptoms, the most relevant of which is flaccid paralysis. At least seven serotypes and over 40 subtypes are known, and they are among the most poisonous natural substances. There are different forms of botulism according to the route of contamination, but the clinical manifestation of descending symmetric flaccid paralysis is consistent, regardless of the route of contamination.

Infant botulism is a rare but life-threatening neuroparalytic syndrome caused by intestinal colonisation of resulting in a symmetrical descending flaccid paralysis. This gram-positive, rod-shaped anaerobic bacillus is universally found in soil with previous links to ingestion of honey and dust contaminated with spores. We present a case of a baby boy with this rare condition eventually linked to dust on a rural outback property.

In the Iberian Peninsula, a paretic clinical picture without known etiology affecting mostly gulls has been reported during the last few decades. This paretic syndrome (PS) affects waterbirds and is characterized by a set of signs of ascendent flaccid paralysis, dyspnea, and diarrhea at different levels of severity.
