Layered two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising materials for piezoelectric and optoelectronic devices due to the introduction of new and interesting properties not seen in the single layers alone. In particular, the group-IV monochalcogenides (MX, M = Ge/Sn and X = S/Se) are highly piezoelectric layered materials which have outstanding optical adsorption properties in the isolated monolayer form. It is possible that combinations of MX monolayers, in a bilayer or heterobilayer system, could exhibit properties that are different to their monolayer counterparts. Using density functional theory calculations, the stacking-dependent piezoelectric response of group-IV monochalcogenide bilayers and heterobilayers with and without applied strain was determined. Of the four materials, SnSe yields the largest value in both the monolayer (0.86 C m) and bilayer (1.36 C m) form. Of the different heterobilayers examined, GeSe/SnSe has the largest value (1.58 C m). With the application of strain, the piezoelectric response can be significantly enhanced, allowing bilayer SnSe to achieve a maximum response of 6.13 C m, which is a ∼450% increase compared to its unstrained form, and is 450-730% higher than reported for other layered materials, such as ZnO and MoSTe. Indirect-to-direct band gap transitions can also be achieved using differing stacking arrangements, with the GeSe/SnSe heterobilayer being determined to have a type II band gap, demonstrating there are potential applications for the heterobilayers in optoelectronic devices. Overall, the group-IV monochalcogenide bilayers have the potential to achieve extraordinary piezoelectric responses under applied strain, making them ideal for nano-based piezoelectric and optoelectronic devices.

: Selective cryolipolysis is a widely used aesthetic procedure that cools subcutaneous adipose tissue to temperatures as low as to induce fat cell destruction. However, real-time monitoring techniques are lacking, limiting the ability to optimize safety and efficacy. Traditional imaging methods either fail to provide adequate penetration depth or lack the resolution necessary for visualizing subcutaneous fatty tissue dynamics.

Electro-acoustic study of airborne standing-wave acoustic levitators based on arrays of ultrasonic transducers.

Ultrasonics

Instituto de Ciencias Físicas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, 62210 Cuernavaca, Mexico. Electronic address:

Airborne acoustic levitation has seen great advances in recent years largely due to the development of devices utilizing arrays of compact, low-power, piezoelectric transducers. In particular, standing wave acoustic levitators are acoustic cavities, consisting of either a single piezoelectric boundary opposing a reflector or two opposing piezoelectric boundaries operating simultaneously. The multiple intra-cavity reflections can be significant enough to generate voltages and currents at the electrical port due to the direct piezoelectric effect, providing valuable information about the optimal operating conditions of the cavity.

Introduction: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is known for its high malignancy, limited clinical treatment options, and poor chemotherapy outcomes. Although some advancements have been made using nanotechnology-based chemotherapy for TNBC treatment, the controlled and on-demand release of chemotherapeutic drugs at the tumor site remains a challenge.

Methods: We manufactured DOX/BaTiO@cRGD-Lip (DBRL) nanoparticles as an ultrasound (US)-controlled release platform targeting the delivery of Doxorubicin (DOX) for TNBC treatment.

Interface phenomena and emerging functionalities in ferroelectric oxide based heterostructures.

Chem Commun (Camb)

March 2025

Department of Physics and Astronomy & Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE, 68588-0299, USA.

Capitalizing on the nonvolatile, nanoscale controllable polarization, ferroelectric perovskite oxides can be integrated with various functional materials for designing emergent phenomena enabled by charge, lattice, and polar symmetry mediated interfacial coupling, as well as for constructing novel energy-efficient electronics and nanophotonics with programmable functionalities. When prepared in thin film or membrane forms, the ferroelectric instability of these materials is highly susceptible to the interfacial electrostatic and mechanical boundary conditions, resulting in tunable polarization fields and Curie temperatures and domain formation. This review focuses on two types of ferroelectric oxide-based heterostructures: the epitaxial perovskite oxide heterostructures and the ferroelectric oxides interfaced with two-dimensional van der Waals materials.
