Betavoltaic (BV) batteries are regarded as appealing power sources due to their high energy densities and long lifetimes. However, the low efficiency and maximum output power density of conventional BV batteries due to the self-absorption effect of radioactive sources, which consist of separate beta-radioactive sources and semiconductor absorbers, limit their applications. In this work, we optimized and compared six NiO-related heterojunction nuclear batteries utilizing Monte Carlo software Geant4 and finite element analysis software COMSOL Multiphysics. The NiO-related heterojunction nuclear batteries integrate beta-radioactive sources and semiconductor absorbers to overcome the shortcomings of conventional BV batteries. Furthermore, we proposed a parallel connection structure utilizing graphene electrode layer to connect two NiO/GaP heterojunctions based on the optimal one from the six heterojunctions in order to maximize the maximum output power density. The total energy conversion efficiency is 2.68% and the maximum output power density is [Formula: see text] of the parallel connection nuclear battery. Finally, we investigated the time-related performance of the parallel connection structure nuclear battery within 200 years. It shows that the maximum output power density decreases from [Formula: see text] in the beginning to [Formula: see text] at 200 years.

Developing high-performance photothermal materials and unraveling the underlying mechanism are essential for photothermal applications. Here, photothermal performance improved by strong interaction between plasmon and topological surface state (TSS) is demonstrated in BiSe/CuS nanowires. This hybrid, which CuS nanosheets were grown on BiSe nanowires, leverages the plasmon resonance and TSS-induced optical property, generating wide and efficient light absorption.

In shallow water environments, choosing an appropriate reference phase velocity for direction-of-arrival estimation with a beamformed underwater horizontal line array is very important. The direction of the maximum beamformer output power will deviate from the true source bearing when a mismatched reference phase velocity was used. This Letter analyzed the intrinsic relationship between the reference phase velocity and normal mode amplitude distribution, source bearing, array aperture, and then proposed a multi-parameter weighted reference phase velocity selection method, which has improved the accuracy of source bearing estimation.

Flexible polymer-based piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) have gained significant interest due to their ability to deliver clean and sustainable energy for self-powered electronics and wearable devices. Recently, the incorporation of fillers into the ferroelectric polymer matrix has been used to improve the relatively low piezoelectric properties of polymer-based PENGs. In this study, we investigated the effect of various nanofillers such as titania (TiO), zinc oxide (ZnO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and lead zirconate titanate (PZT) on the PENG performance of the nanocomposite thin films containing the nanofillers in poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoro ethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) matrix.

Bismuth sulfide has garnered considerable attention in recent years for thermoelectric applications because it comprises of earth-abundant, low-cost sulfur. However, it has a large bandgap causing low electrical conductivity compared to other chalcogenides, limiting its thermoelectric performance. In the present work, using a small concentration of CuCl doping, 9-times ZT-enhancement is demonstrated in BiS attaining a maximum ZT≈1.
