Electronic structures of iron in glasses are essential for unraveling the effect of transition metals on amorphous networks and controlling the electro-optical and transport properties of advanced glasses and amorphous energy-storing materials. The electronic configurations around iron in glasses, however, remain not well understood due to the structural disorders arising from multiple iron species with distinct valence, coordination, and spin states. Here, the first 1s3p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) for oxide glasses identifies hidden electronic configurations for Fe and Fe in amorphous networks. The results allow us to quantify the composition-induced evolution of oxygen ligand-field interactions of high-spin Fe 3d states with varying valence and coordination environments in complex glasses. The distinct electronic structures account for the electronic origins of iron-induced changes in the glass properties. The results offer prospects for a simultaneous probing of valence, coordination, and spin states of transition metals in diverse multicomponent oxide glasses and functional amorphous solids via 1s3p RIXS.

BiTe recently emerges as a promising candidate material for the next generation of mid-wave to long-wave infrared photodetection owing to its exceptionally narrow bandgap (approximately 0.2 eV) and the favorable photoelectronic properties. In particular, its topological insulator structure is safeguarded by time-reversal symmetry, leading to electronic structures with distinct surface and bulk states as well as distinctive optoelectronic properties.

Proposing an effective modification strategy to optimize catalyst reaction potentials is crucial for enhancing catalytic performance. In this study, we employed a combined approach by adjusting nitrogen dopants in the first- and second-shell environments to tailor the OER/ORR reaction potentials of FeN, CoN, and NiN active centers. Using density functional theory simulations, we systematically compared the effects of first- and second-shell nitrogen dopants on the local atomic/electronic structures and catalytic activities.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) of quinoline provides an eco-friendly and prospective route to achieve the highly value-added generation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (THQ). Co element has been proven to be the efficient catalytic site for ECH of quinoline, but the rational regulation of the electronic structure of active Co site to improve the activity is still a challenge. Herein, the hierarchical core-shell structure consisting of NiCo-MOF nanosheets encapsulated Cu(OH) nanorods (Cu(OH)@CoNi-MOF) is constructed.

Layered-Hierarchical Dual-Lattice Strain Suppresses NiSe Surface Reconstruction for Stable OER in Alkaline Fresh/Seawater Splitting.

Transition metal selenides (TMSe) are promising oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts but act as precursors rather than the actual active phase, transforming into amorphous oxyhydroxides during OER. This transformation, along with the formation of selenium oxyanions and unstable heterointerfaces, complicates the structure-activity relationship and reduces stability. This work introduces novel "layered-hierarchical dual lattice strain engineering" to inhibit the surface reconstruction of NiSe by modulating both the nickel foam (NF) substrate with MoN nanosheets (NM) and the NiSe nanorods-nanosheets catalytic layer (NiSe-NiSe-NiO, NSN) with ultrafast interfacial bimetallic amorphous NiFeOOH coating, achieving the optimized NM/NSN/NiFeOOH configuration.

In 2013, all populations of the precious wood genera (Fabaceae) and (Ebenaceae) from Madagascar were placed on CITES Appendix II in an effort to combat unsustainable and illicit over-exploitation and illegal exportation for the international market. The accompanying Action Plan adopted by CITES identified several information and capacity gaps, which undermine the sustainable and equitable management of these valuable resources. These gaps include the lack of practical, reliable tools to identify species along the entire value chain, from standing trees to cut wood and finished products.
