Anthrax, a fatal infectious disease caused by Bacillus anthracis (B. anthracis), poses a significant threat to public health. Herein, a novel type of carbon dots rich in π → π∗ transitions (R-CDs) was developed to fabricate an R-CDs/Eu hybrid for the rapid on-site detection of the B. anthracis biomarker dipicolinic acid (DPA). The R-CDs/Eu hybrid exhibits two distinct fluorescence responses to DPA: (1) quenching of the R-CDs fluorescence due to the internal filter effect, and (2) enhancement of Eu fluorescence resulting from the antenna effect and the protective role of R-CDs, enabling ratiometric detection of DPA over a range of 0.1-100 μM with excellent selectivity. Furthermore, a portable, cost-effective device based on the hybrid was developed, enabling in-filed detection of DPA in lake water and real-time monitoring of DPA release from bacterial spores, which holds great promise for monitoring pathogenic biomarkers, with significant implications water safety and human health.

The confined synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) in solid matrixes is a promising avenue for developing new afterglow materials. Benefiting from the advantages of the sol-gel preparation of nanoporous glass, we report transparent glass-confined CDs with tunable afterglow luminescence. Switchable thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of CDs were achieved by adjusting the sintering temperature and ion doping.

The controlled functionalization of graphene is critical for tuning and enhancing its properties, thereby expanding its potential applications. Covalent functionalization offers a deeper tuning of the geometric and electronic structure of graphene compared to non-covalent methods; however, the existing techniques involve side reactions and spatially uncontrolled functionalization, pushing research toward more selective and controlled methods. A promising approach is 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, successfully utilized with carbon nanotubes.

Wound-infected bacterial biofilms are protected by self-secreted extracellular polymer substances (EPS), which can confer them with formidable resistance to the host's immune responses and antibiotics, and thus delays in diagnosis and treatment can cause stubborn infections and life-threatening complications. However, tailoring an integrated theranostic platform with the capability to promptly diagnose and treat wound biofilm infection still remains a challenge. Herein, a versatile erbium-doped carbon dot-encapsulated zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Er:CDs@ZIF-8) nanoheterojunction (C@Z nano-HJ) is tailored and incorporated into gelatin methacrylate/poly(-hydroxyethyl acrylamide) (GelMA/PHEAA)-based tough and sticky hydrogel dressing (GH-C@Z) to achieve wound biofilm infection-integrated theranostic application.
