A method for contrasting plates of acrylic resins for cranioplasty in defects in the skull bones was developed. Per each 1.0 g of protacryl (or butacryl, etc.) powder 0.2 g of iodine-containing agents (verografin, urografin, urotrast, etc.) was added. This ensured a high contrast of the allograft not only in the immediate but also in the late period. The developed method is of great significance in conducting expert medical assessment of working capacity when there is no corresponding medical documentation and the medical history is unclear.

Porous tantalum represents an alternative metal for primary and revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with several unique properties. Tantalum is a transition metal, which in its bulk form has shown excellent biocompatibility and is safe to use in vivo as evidenced by its current application in pacemaker electrodes, cranioplasty plates, and as radiopaque markers. Current designs for orthopedic implants maintain a high volumetric porosity (70%-80%), low modulus of elasticity (3 MPa), and high frictional characteristics, making this metal conducive to biologic fixation.

Porous tantalum, a new low modulus metal with a characteristic appearance similar to cancellous bone, is currently available for use in several orthopedic applications (hip and knee arthroplasty, spine surgery, and bone graft substitute). The open-cell structure of repeating dodecahedrons is produced via carbon vapor deposition/infiltration of commercially pure tantalum onto a vitreous carbon scaffolding. This transition metal maintains several interesting biomaterial properties, including: a high volumetric porosity (70-80%), low modulus of elasticity (3MPa), and high frictional characteristics.

Object: Hydroxyapatite cement (HAC) is used with increasing frequency by craniofacial surgeons for building facial and skull base structures and by neurosurgeons for cranioplasty. Failures of HAC in cranioplasty have been attributed to breakage due to subjacent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pulsations through the dura mater. The authors describe a technique that involves inserting a resorbable MacroPore perforated plate to dampen CSF pulsations and then pouring HAC over the plate to fill a cranial defect and complete skull contouring.

Objective: Over the past few years, we have performed several brain SPECT studies on patients who have had previous head trauma that required metallic cranioplasty. Transaxial images showed clearly defined photon-deficient areas extending from the brain tissue into the area of the scalp. To investigate the extent and pattern of this type of artifact, SPECT brain phantom studies were performed and compared with the patient studies.
