Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic cancer features a dense tissue environment that hinders effective delivery of the chemotherapy drug gemcitabine, making treatment challenging.
  • A targeted drug delivery system was developed using gold nanoparticles and the anti-EGFR antibody cetuximab, combined with gemcitabine and polyethylene glycol to enhance drug delivery to pancreatic cancer and associated cells.
  • The new drug delivery system, particularly the PEGylated nanoconjugate ACG44P1000, showed improved effectiveness in reducing the viability of pancreatic cancer cells in lab tests, setting the stage for future studies on its potential to combat tumor growth and desmoplasia in living organisms.*

Mineral content of calcified tissues in cystic fibrosis mice.

Biol Trace Elem Res

Although abnormal hard tissue mineralization is a recognized complication of cystic fibrosis (CF), the pathogenesis leading from the defective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein is poorly understood. We hypothesized that CFTR plays a direct role in the mineralization of bone and teeth and tested the hypothesis using CF mouse models [CFTR(-) mice]. In vivo measurements by dual-emission X-ray absorpitometry (DEXA) indicated that bone mineral density (BMD) was reduced in CF mice as compared to gender-matched littermates.

: Colloidal gold, conjugated to ligands or antibodies, is routinely used as a label for the detection of cell structures by light (LM) and electron microscopy (EM). To date, several methods to count the number of colloidal gold labels have been employed with limited success. Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), a physical method for the analysis of the elemental composition of materials, can be used to provide a quantitative index of gold accumulation in bulk specimens.

The calibration and application of a facility, based on energy dispersive X-ray fluorescent analysis (EDXRF) using 109Cd as an excitation source, for in vivo and in vitro estimation of Ca, Pb, Sr and Zn in tooth enamel is described. During the in vivo measurements, the device ensures tissue protection of face and mouth cavity from radiation, and only a small part of tooth surface under study is irradiated. To calibrate the facility, the contents of Ca, Sr and Zn were analyzed simultaneously in the enamel of 50 teeth by EDXRF and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA).
