Scandium trifluoride is a model negative thermal expansion (NTE) material. Its simple structure can be described as an A-site vacant perovskite, and it shows isotropic NTE over a very wide temperature range (up to ∼1100 K), due to transverse vibrational motion of the fluoride. Like many framework NTE materials, it undergoes a phase transition at low pressures, adopting a rhombohedral (3̅) structure at >0.7 GPa and 300 K in commonly used nonpenetrating pressure media, such as silicone oil. High pressure X-ray diffraction data and gas uptake/release measurements indicate that, on compression in helium above ∼200 K, helium is inserted into ScF to form the defect perovskite He ScF. The incorporation of helium stiffens the structure and changes its phase behavior. At room temperature, complete filling of the structure with helium does not occur until >1.5 GPa. On compression, a cubic perovskite structure is maintained until ∼5 GPa. As the pressure was increased to ∼9.5 GPa, a further transition occurred at ∼7 GPa. The first transition at ∼5 GPa is likely to a tetragonal (4/) perovskite, but the detailed structure of the perovskite phase formed on compression above ∼7 GPa is unclear. Cooling down from 300 to 100 K in helium at ∼0.4 GPa leads to an approximate composition of HeScF. High pressure neutron diffraction measurements, in the temperature range 15-150 K show that the incorporation of helium increases the pressure at which the cubic (3̅) to rhombohedral (3̅) putative quantum structural phase transition occurs from close to 0 GPa to ∼0.2 GPa at 0 K.

Pressure-Induced Phase Transitions in Bismutotantalite (BiTaO): Insights from Single-Crystal Diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy.

Key Laboratory of High-Temperature and High-Pressure Study of the Earth's Interior, Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guiyang, Guizhou 550081, China.

In situ high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analyses were performed on a natural bismutotantalite with an α-BiTaO structure. The results indicate that α-BiTaO transforms into an orthorhombic phase (HP γ-BiTaO), likely through an intermediate orthorhombic phase (HP β-BiTaO). The transition pressures are 11.

This session presented emerging realworld evidence on novel glucocorticoid (GC) sparing therapies for ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV). It covered the first-in-class oral C5a receptor antagonist avacopan for severe granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), and antiinterleukin-5 therapies in the management of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA). Avacopan was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA) for the treatment of AAV in 2021, following the phase 3 ADVOCAT E trial comparing oral avacopan to an oral GC taper for GPA and MPA.

Highlights from the breakout session: cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease (II).

Rheumatology (Oxford)

March 2025

Department of Internal Medicine IV, Nephrology and Hypertension, Medical University Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria.

The steps leading to key pathogenetic aspect of ANCA-associated vasculitis, such as lung nodules in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), onset of glomerulonephritis (GN) in experimental myeloperoxidase (MPO)-ANCA models and the implications of carrying staphylococcal superantigens, such as toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (tsst-1), in GPA remain to be elucidated. The session 'Cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease (II)' was devoted to close some of these knowledge gaps and underlined that research in ANCA-associated vasculitis leads to more granular understanding of these complex diseases. Here, we present an overview of this session at a glance.

Pressure-Driven Circularly Polarized Luminescence Enhancement and Chirality Amplification.

J Am Chem Soc

Henan Key Laboratory of Crystalline Molecular Functional Materials, College of Chemistry, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou 450001, China.

Achieving ultrahigh-color-purity circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in low-dimensional chiral perovskites is challenging due to strong electron-phonon coupling caused by lead halide octahedral distortion. Herein, the circularly polarized piezoluminescence behaviors of six novel chiral perovskites, (/-3-XPEA)PbBr (PEA = phenethylamine; X = F, Cl, Br), were systematically investigated. Upon compression, (/-3-ClPEA)PbBr exhibits significant piezofluorochromic behaviors, transforming from yellow CPL to ultrahigh-color-purity deep-blue CPL.
