Oxidative stress (OxSt) and inflammation are common in end-stage renal disease and dialysis patients; they are known risk factors for cardiovascular disease and mortality. In peritoneal dialysis (PD), OxSt and inflammation are even further increased compared to the already increased oxidative stress of their pre-dialysis phase. This is due to the high glucose-based solutions currently used, whose continuous contact with the peritoneal membrane can induce significant long-term morphological and functional changes (mesothelial to mesenchymal transition, thickening, neo-angiogenesis and fibrosis) of the peritoneal membrane.

A combination of logical judging circuit and water-resistant ultrathin film PEDOT: PSS electrode for noninvasive ECG measurement.

Discov Nano

March 2024

Department of Modern Mechanical Engineering, Graduate School of Creative Science and Engineering, Waseda University, 3-4-1 Okubo, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, 169-8555, Japan.

Heart disease-related deaths have increased in recent decades, with most patients dying of sudden cardiac arrest. In such instances, the effect of regular electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements is minimal. Therefore, long-term ECG monitoring has become increasingly important.

Hyperkalemic or Low Potassium Cardioplegia Protects against Reduction of Energy Metabolism by Oxidative Stress.

Open-heart surgery is often an unavoidable option for the treatment of cardiovascular disease and prevention of cardiomyopathy. Cardiopulmonary bypass surgery requires manipulating cardiac contractile function via the perfusion of a cardioplegic solution. Procedure-associated ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury, a major source of oxidative stress, affects postoperative cardiac performance and long-term outcomes.

The constant rise in energy demands, costs, and concerns about global warming has created a demand for new renewable alternative fuels that can be produced sustainably. Lignocellulose biomass can act as an excellent energy source and various value-added compounds like xylitol. In this research study, we have explored the xylose reductase that was obtained from the genome of a thermophilic fungus while searching for an enzyme to convert xylose to xylitol at higher temperatures.

Aim: To investigate the effects of bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide on the structure of tooth enamel and the role of two remineralizing agents for their potential to remineralize any damaged regions of enamel.

Materials And Methods: Freshly extracted 32 mature permanent central incisors were selected and sectioned at the level of the cemento-enamel junction. The teeth were divided into four groups consisting of eight teeth each: No bleaching (control) [Group 1], bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide [Group 2], bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide followed by application of casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride paste [Group 3], and bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide followed by application of xylitol-coated calcium phosphate fluoride varnish [Group 4].
