We developed a programmable LED array to evaluate different wavelength illumination (UV, blue, green, yellow, amber, and red) and modulation schemes to improve catch rates in insect traps. The device can communicate through Bluetooth with a simple Android app to update the operational settings to facilitate field experiments, including which LEDs to operate, when to operate (always, night only, or predefined intervals after sunset and/or before sunrise), and to change the LED intensities/modulation during operation. We used the devices to evaluate different wavelengths to improve catches in traps for coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB; Linnaeus) in the field, as well as to evaluate lighting preferences of Asian citrus psyllid (ACP; Kuwayama). In both cases, insects were most strongly attracted to constant UV illumination. However, CRB avoided traps with any "visible" wavelength LEDs placed in panels of traps, while ACP was moderately attracted to blue, yellow, and amber. For CRB, UV illumination of cups at the bottom of panel traps reduced catch rates compared to UV illumination higher in the panels of traps, consistent with observations of dorsal orientation towards light observed by other researchers in nocturnal beetles and moths. Finally, we provide some hardware design recommendations to improve the energy efficiency of similar devices for more widespread deployment in insect traps and for controlling the LEDs to evaluate the effects of intensity and modulation with minimal pulsing, which our observations suggest may result in insects avoiding traps.

The recognition that researcher discretion coupled with unconscious biases and motivated reasoning sometimes leads to false findings ("p-hacking") led to the broad embrace of study preregistration and other open-science practices in experimental research. Paradoxically, the preregistration of quasi-experimental studies remains uncommon although such studies involve far more discretionary decisions and are the most prevalent approach to making causal claims in the social sciences. I discuss several forms of recent empirical evidence indicating that questionable research practices contribute to the comparative unreliability of quasi-experimental research and advocate for adopting the preregistration of such studies.

Three multicomponent systems, namely, 2,4-diamino-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine-nicotinic acid (DAPT-NA), CHN·CHNO, (I), 2,4-diamino-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazin-1-ium hydrogen malonate (DAPT-MMA), CHN·CHO, (II), and 2,4-diamino-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazin-1-ium hydrogen (+)-dibenzoyl-D-tartarate (DAPT-DBTA), CHN·CHO, (III), have been synthesized and characterized via single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and their supramolecular interactions have been analysed. The formation of cocrystal (I) and salts (II) and (III) was confirmed through the widening of the C-N-C bond angle of the triazine moiety of 2,4-diamino-6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine and the difference in the C-O bond distances between the carboxyl and carboxylate groups of the respective carboxylic acids. Cocrystal (I) and salt (II) form robust homomeric and heteromeric R(8) ring motifs through primary acid-base interactions and complementary base pairing.
