Collagen contains abundant cell binding motifs, which are conducive to adhesion, migration, and differentiation, maintain cell vitality and promote cell proliferation. However, pure collagen hydrogel has some shortcomings such as poor mechanical properties, poor thermal stability and fast degradation. Numerous studies have shown that the properties of collagen can be improved by combining it with natural polysaccharides such as alginate, chitosan, hyaluronic acid and cellulose. In this paper, the research status and biological application fields of four kinds of composite hydrogels, including collagen-alginate composite hydrogels, collagen-chitosan hydrogels, collagen-hyaluronic acid hydrogels and collagen-cellulose hydrogels, were summarized. The common preparation methods of four kinds of composite hydrogels were introduced, and the future development direction of collagen-based composite hydrogels was prospected.

This study presents a novel composite superabsorbent hydrogel (SAH) synthesized from nanosilica and polyacrylic acid, demonstrating exceptional efficacy in removing Congo Red dye from wastewater. Utilizing a fast concentration gradient method, we achieved the synthesis of nanosilica with a high specific surface area of 380 m/g, a total pore volume of 0.81 cm/g, and a mean pore diameter of 17 nm.

Physical hydrogels, three-dimensional polymer networks with reversible cross-linking, have been widely used in many developments throughout the history of mankind. However, physical hydrogels face significant challenges in applications due to wound rupture and low elasticity. Some self-heal wounds with strong ionic bond throughout the network but struggle to immediately recover during cyclic operation.

Improving degradation efficiency of activated sludge towards bisphenol A (BPA) is related to water safety. A hydrogel immobilized bacteria@metal-organic-frameworks (im-SQ-2@MOFs) was synthesized previously, which was a composite formed by metal organic frameworks adhering to BPA degrading bacteria. Accordingly, this study added im-SQ-2@MOFs as enhancer to augment the BPA degradation ability of activated sludge.

Background: To optimize a novel composite scaffold comprising of nano phosphorylated pullulan incorporated carboxymethyl chitosan (nPP-CMC) and to evaluate its cell viability and proliferation in human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs).
Methodology: Nano phosphorylated pullulan (nPP) in concentrations of 200 mg, 400 mg, 600 mg, 800 mg, and 1 g was vortexed in 20 mL of distilled water, followed by 30 mins of ultrasonication for even dispersion. 1 g of CMC was added to each nPP mixture, blended for 1 hour to form a hydrogel, and freeze-dried for 18 hours at -20°C to yield nPP-CMC scaffolds in ratios of 1:5, 2:5, 3:5, 4:5, and 1:1.

In clinical practice, repairing osteochondral defects (OCDs) is challenging because of the complex cartilage/subchondral bone structure and intricate immunological microenvironment. Here, we identify the crucial role of adaptive immunity dysfunction by revealing that an increase of T helper 17 (Th17) cells exacerbated osteochondral tissue degradation via its pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-17 (IL-17) in the early-stage OCDs. Next, we leveraged this adaptive immunity mechanism and combined it with regenerative signals to develop a multifunctional hydrogel system capable of simultaneously tackling immune dysfunction and regenerative deficiency.
