RETINAL TOXICITY SECONDARY TO INADVERTENT SUBRETINAL MITOMYCIN C INJECTION.

Retin Cases Brief Rep

Department of Ophthalmology, Northwest Permanente, Vancouver, Washington.

Published: March 2025

Purpose: To report a patient who developed retinal toxicity after inadvertent subretinal mitomycin C injection during glaucoma surgery.

Methods: Case report and review of the literature.

Results: A 73-year-old man underwent glaucoma tube shunt surgery with sub-Tenon mitomycin C injection. Postoperatively, he developed retinal edema, hemorrhages, and occlusive vasculopathy localized to the quadrant of the mitomycin C injection. It was determined that the sclera had been inadvertently punctured during mitomycin C injection, resulting in subretinal placement of the medication and resultant retinal toxicity. At postoperative month 1, there was diffuse chorioretinal atrophy in the area of the injection. The macula was spared and he retained his preoperative visual acuity.

Conclusion: Inadvertent subretinal mitomycin C injection may occur when attempting to inject the drug into the sub-Tenon space and can result in localized retinal toxicity.

The new Maternity Protection Act (MuSchG) enacted in 2018, is intended to enable pregnant employees to carry out their work, to protect the pregnant employee and the child and to counteract discrimination. Nevertheless, a ban on surgical activities or even a ban on employment is often issued, although the law first requires the workplace to be reorganized to enable the pregnant employee to continue working. In many cases, such bans are issued without the legally required risk assessment, which constitutes prohibited discrimination.

Intratumoral delivery of Mitomycin C using bio-responsive Gellan Gum Nanogel: In-vitro evaluation and enhanced chemotherapeutic efficacy.

Intratumoral drug delivery systems hold immense promise in overcoming the limitations of conventional IV chemotherapy, particularly in enhancing therapeutic efficacy and minimizing systemic side effects. In this study, we introduce a novel redox-responsive intratumoral nanogel system that combines the biocompatibility of natural polysaccharides with the tailored properties of synthetic polymers. The nanogel features a unique cross-linked architecture incorporating redox-sensitive segments, designed to leverage the elevated glutathione levels in the tumor microenvironment for controlled drug release.
