Published: November 2024

Background And Aims: Although species in the fungal genus are often commensal residents of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, they can also cause high-mortality systemic candidiasis. Most pathogenic species are dimorphic fungi that exist predominantly in filamentous forms in the invading tissues. is the most prominent pathogen among species, but nonalbicans species have also emerged as important pathogens. The stomach is the most acidic niche in the GI tract and is maintained at pH 1-2 in healthy individuals. The aim of the present study was to determine whether species can survive in gastric fluid and to observe their morphology under varied pH conditions.

Methods: We investigated the in vitro survival of the pathogenic species and in simulated gastric fluid.

Results: We first described that a portion of the 4 species can survive under highly acidic conditions. Moreover, dimorphic species, namely, and exhibited yeast-hyphal transition in simulated gastric fluid with elevated pH. Pathogenic filamentous cells had lower acid resistance than yeast cells.

Conclusion: These findings may illuminate the migration to the lower GI tract by commensal fungi of the oral cavity.

Improvements in tumor therapy require a combination of strategies where targeted treatment is critical. We developed a new versatile nanoplatform, MA@E, that generates high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with effective photothermal conversions in the removal of tumors. Enhanced stability liposomes were employed as carriers to facilitate the uniform distribution and stable storage of encapsulated gold nanorods (AuNRs) and Mn-MIL-100 metal-organic frameworks, with efficient delivery of MA@E to the cytoplasm.

February 2025

Clinical Sciences Department, College of Dentistry, Ajman University, Ajman, United Arab Emirates.

Objective: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the current evidence regarding the impact of postbiotics on dental caries, focusing on the effectiveness of postbiotic interventions in caries prevention, mechanisms of action, optimal dosages, and administration protocols.

Methods: A literature search was conducted across PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. Eligible studies included randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental, observational, and in vitro studies.

The emerging fungal pathogen () has been increasingly detected in environmental and animal samples, although studies in this regard are still scarce, especially in fisheries contexts. This study reports the first-time detection of in a commercially relevant fish species belonging to the Sciaenidae family ( sp.), indicating its potential emergence as a pathogen in Brazil.

Background: The current clinical treatment of periodontitis usually involves mechanical removal of pathogenic bacteria through ultrasonic scaling and root planing, supplemented with antibacterial medications to inhibit microbial overgrowth. However, the therapeutic efficiency remains unsatisfactory due to complicated periodontal anatomy, limited plaque removal, short retention of antibiotics, and related side effects.

Methods And Results: To address these issues, we successfully synthesized mesoporous titanium dioxide nanoparticles (MTN) via a sol-gel method, which were modified with hemoglobin (Hb) and loaded with minocycline (MINO).

High-resolution genome assembly and population genetic study of the endangered maple (Sapindaceae): implications for conservation strategies.

Diels (Sapindaceae), a highly threatened maple endemic to the dry-hot valleys of the Yalong River in western Sichuan, China, represents a valuable resource for horticulture and conservation. This study presents the first chromosomal-scale genome assembly of (~626 Mb, 2 = 26), constructed using PacBio HiFi and Hi-C sequencing technologies. Comparative genomic analyses revealed significant recent genomic changes through rapid amplification of transposable elements, particularly long terminal repeat retrotransposons, coinciding with the dramatic climate change during recent uplift of the Hengduan Mountains.
