Robotic-assisted surgery is an attractive and promising option with unique advantages in rectal cancer surgery, but the optimal surgical approach is still debatable. Therefore, we aimed to compare the short- and long-term outcomes of the robotic-assisted approach with the laparoscopic-assisted and open approaches. A single referral center in Israel retrospectively reviewed all patients that underwent an elective rectal resection for primary non-metastatic rectal cancer between 2010 and 2020.

Purpose: This study aims to assess the short- and long-term outcomes of rectal cancer patients undergoing robotic versus laparoscopic surgery after receiving neo-adjuvant therapy. There is a lack of clarity on this topic, necessitating a comprehensive comparison.
Method: Between January 2017 and December 2021, consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopic and robotic rectal resection at a major public medical center were enrolled.

We investigated the short-term outcomes of robot-assisted surgery for rectal cancer in our department. Among 98 cases of colorectal cancer who underwent robot-assisted surgery between October 2019 and December 2023, 91 cases of rectal cancer surgery using the da Vinci X surgical system® were included, and clinicopathological and surgical outcomes were examined. The patients included 58 males and 33 females, with a median age of 71 years.
