Augmented reality (AR) displays are emerging as the next generation of interactive platform, providing deeper human-digital interactions and immersive experiences beyond traditional flat-panel displays. Diffractive waveguide is a promising optical combiner technology for AR owing to its potential for the slimmest geometry and lightest weight. However, severe chromatic aberration of diffractive coupler has constrained widespread adoption of diffractive waveguide. Wavelength-dependent light deflection, caused by dispersion in both in-coupling and out-coupling processes, results in limited full-color field of view (FOV) and nonuniform optical responses in color and angular domains. Here we introduce an innovative full-color AR system that overcomes this long-standing challenge of chromatic aberration using a combination of inverse-designed metasurface couplers and a high refractive index waveguide. The optimized metasurface couplers demonstrate true achromatic behavior across the maximum FOV supported by the waveguide (exceeding 45°). Our AR prototype based on the designed metasurface waveguide, exhibits superior color accuracy and uniformity. This unique achromatic metasurface waveguide technology is expected to advance the development of visually compelling experience in compact AR display systems.

Integrated photonics has emerged as a pivotal technology in the advancement of next-generation computing and communication devices. Thermal optical phase shifters (OPSs) have been widely used to realize a tunable Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and a micro-ring resonator (MRR), which are the building bricks for the LSI/VLSI photonic integrated circuits. Due to the thermal crosstalk and the low modulation efficiency, thermal OPSs have large-scale size and high power consumption.

Unidirectional radiation and, hence, gain enhancement can be achieved by placing a primary radiator (simple antenna) at suitable height over a reflector to diminish back radiation and to enhance the forward radiation. The reflector used to enhance the gain is usually an electrically conducting surface (ECS) or an artificial magnetic conducting surface (AMCS). The ECS unifies the direction of radiation by reflecting the incident wave with [Formula: see text] phase shift, which requires the placement of the antenna at large enough height above the reflector to avoid destructive interference between the incident and the reflected waves.

This study presents a novel pseudospin-polarized waveguide with closed boundaries, designed using complementary metasurfaces with dual surface impedances. By enforcing electromagnetic duality, the proposed structure establishes mirror reflection symmetry, significantly reducing backscattering and ensuring robust one-way wave propagation. The waveguide effectively suppresses backward-propagating modes, even in the presence of bends and structural discontinuities, making it a highly stable and efficient platform for guided-wave applications.

Total internal reflection generally occurs at incident angles beyond the critical angle, confining electromagnetic waves in dielectrics with higher refractive indices. In this work, we present a metasurface-based solution to transform such total reflection into high-efficiency transmission. We demonstrate that a phase-gradient antireflection metasurface designed on the dielectric surface not only compensates for the transverse wave vectors of the incident and transmitted waves but also addresses the impendence mismatch between the two media, eventually achieving high-efficiency transmission with flexibly-controlled wavefronts beyond the critical angle.
