Published: May 2025

American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis is an endemic parasitic disease in several regions, including Brazil. Squamous Cell Carcinoma is the main malignant neoplasm of the head and neck and is strongly linked to chronic sunburn. We present a rare case in which a patient exhibits the manifestation of both diseases in the oral region.

Background: The Cacao Region spans several municipalities in the state of Bahia. It is one of the major foci of American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) in Brazil. We report the findings of a pilot cross-sectional study describing the phlebotomine fauna found around living sites of newly diagnosed ATL cases in that area.

Adequacy of nutritional status and dietary intake of adult and elderly patients with American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis.

Einstein (Sao Paulo)

February 2025

Laboratório de Pesquisa Clínica e Vigilância em Leishmanioses, Instituto Nacional de Infectologia Evandro Chagas, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil.

Background: This cross-sectional study describes the adequacy of nutritional status and food intake in patients with American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis and its relationship with the form of the disease: cutaneous or mucosal. Patients with mucosal have greater nutritional impairment associated with older age and symptoms such as odynophagia, dysphagia, and oropharyngeal lesions, which lead to reduced dietary intake and inadequate intake of micronutrients.

Objective: Patients with American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis often experience malnutrition, weight loss, and dehydration; however, their eating profile and the degree of interference of disease manifestations on food intake is not well understood.

Cytokine Networks and the Clinical Outcome of American Teg-Umentary Leishmaniasis: Unveiling Targets for Alternative Therapeutic Interventions.

Department of Morphology, Institute of Biological Sciences, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Av. Pres. Antônio Carlos, 6627-Pampulha, Belo Horizonte 31270-901, MG, Brazil.

American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL), caused by parasites of the genus , presents a significant global health challenge, especially in Brazil, where cutaneous and mucosal forms are highly prevalent. Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) typically results in single lesions, while mucosal Leishmaniasis (ML) leads to destructive mucosal lesions with a worse prognosis. The immune response, regulated by cytokines, plays a crucial role in disease progression and resolution.

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms in genes associated with the vitamin D pathway related to clinical and therapeutic outcomes of American tegumentary leishmaniasis.

Front Cell Infect Microbiol

January 2025

Laboratório de Imunidade Natural (LIN), Instituto de Patologia Tropical e Saúde Pública, Universidade Federal de Goiás, Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil.

Background: The vitamin D pathway contributes to the microbicidal activity of macrophages against infection. In addition to induction of this pathway, interferon-gamma (IFNγ), interleukin (IL)-15, and IL32γ are part of a network of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The aim of this study was to evaluate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the components of the vitamin D pathway and associated cytokine genes that could be related to resistance or susceptibility to American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL).
