Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a multicomplex neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor neuron death, muscle atrophy, and respiratory failure. Owing to its multicomplex mechanisms and multifactorial nature in the skeletal muscle and spinal cord (SC), no effective therapy has been developed. However, herbal medicines, known for their multitarget properties, have demonstrated promising efficacy with limited side effects in treating various diseases. Specifically, Pallas has been demonstrated to exhibit analgesic, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. However, the pharmacological mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of in hSOD1 animal models remain unexplored. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the multitarget effects of in hSOD1 transgenic mice, an ALS model. Footprint tests, western blot assays, and immunohistochemical analysis were used to assess the effect of on the tibia anterior (TA), gastrocnemius (GC), and SC. The results revealed that augmented motor function and decreased motor neuron loss in hSOD1 mice. Furthermore, significantly lowered the expression of proteins associated with inflammation and oxidative stress in the skeletal muscle (TA and GC) and SC. also regulated autophagy function by reducing the levels of key markers, such as P62/sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1), microtubule-associated proteins 1A/1B light chain 3B, and SMAD family member 2, in the muscle and SC. Overall, treatment improved motor function, prevented motor neuron death, and exhibited anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects in the skeletal muscle and SC of ALS mouse models. These results suggest that could serve as a promising multitarget therapeutic agent for systemic and multipathological diseases.

This chapter deals with the unique human abilities of using tools, imitating others' gestures, drawing, and building complex items. Herein, after a brief overview of clinical manifestations and assessment of disorders of tool use and imitation (upper limb apraxia) and of the impairments in drawing and assembling multipart objects (constructional apraxia), brain asymmetries are discussed mainly starting from the neuropsychologic studies on patients with focal brain lesions, although both upper limb apraxia and constructional apraxia are often observed during the course of neurodegenerative diseases. Although no room is allowed here for a full discussion of brain-behavior relationships, relevant functional neuroimaging findings in healthy individuals are considered.

This chapter offers an overview of the literature on human handedness and its assessment in clinical neurologic practice and research. There are two major forms of handedness: hand preference, which describes a subjective preference to use one hand over the other for skilled motor activities like writing, and hand skill, which describes objectively measured mother skill. This chapter gives an overview of widely used questionnaires and tests to assess hand preference and hand skill, as well as suggestions on how to determine handedness categories such as left-handed, right-handed, and mixed-handed based on the results of these questionnaires and tests.

The cerebellum is a subcortical structure tucked underneath the cerebrum that contains the majority of neurons in the brain, despite its small size. While it has received less attention in the study of brain asymmetries than the cerebrum, structural asymmetries in the cerebellum have been found in cerebellar volume that mirror cerebral asymmetries. Larger cerebellar structures have been reported on the right compared to the left, either for the whole cerebellar hemisphere or the anterior part of the cerebellum, with the latter accompanied by a left increase in the posterior cerebellum.
