In addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) the UNDP has fixed 17 issues out of them clean water (SDG-6) and affordable energy (SDG-7) serve as decisive points towards sustenance of the society. Material chemistry plays a vital role to design new chemical compounds and exploring versatile activities towards the solution of pressing challenges. Copper, third abundant metal in human body following iron and zinc, is useful to monitor many metabolic processes. Exposure to high level Copper or its deficiency can cause various health issues. It is essential to determine quantity of Cu in a wide range of consumables. A luminescent coordination polymer (LCP) of Cd(d) as a metal node, fumaric acid (fuma ) as a linker and tripod N-coordinated 4'-Chloro-2,2',6',2"-terpyridine (4-Cltpy) as end-capping ligand, {[Cd(fuma)₂(4-Cltpy)].(HO)} (CP1), has been used in this research for trace quantity detection of Cu in aqueous solution (LOD: 0.0307 μM (Cu(II)) (WHO recommended toxicity limit of Cu(II) is 3.15 μM). The band gap of CP1 (experimental value by Tauc's plot, 3.56 eV and theoretically calculated band gap, 3.54 eV) directs to fabricate Schottky semiconducting device (ITO/CP1/Al) which determines electrical conductivity, 4.52×10 Sm at room temperature. Therefore, CP1 is a promising candidate as a conductive material and a sensor. Because of its dual purpose, CP1 may be very beneficial for device applications and a breakthrough in material science in near future.

An Eu Coordination Polymer: Its Single-Crystal Transformation Synthesis, Fluorescence Detection of Melamine, and Proton Conductivity.

Inorg Chem

March 2025

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering,Inner Mongolia Key Laboratory of Rare Earth Catalysis, Inner Mongolia University, Hohhot 010021, China.

In this work, an Eu coordination polymer () was synthesized by a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation based upon complex under the stimulation of water molecules ({[Eu(bpdc)(HO)]·4HO} (), {[Eu(bpdc)(HO)]·5HO} (), and Hbpdc = 2,2'-bipyridine-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid ligand). Complex exhibited considerable pH fluorescence stability in an aqueous solution. Notably, the experiment showed that complex achieved high selectivity and sensitivity for the detection of the notorious food additive melamine (MEL) through a significant fluorescence enhancement response; and yet complex had no fluorescent response with MEL.

Carlson School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Clark University, 950 Main St., Worcester, MA 01610, USA.

Reaction of copper(II) bromide with 3,5-di-chloro-pyridine (3,5-Clpy) or 3,5-di-methyl-pyridine (3,5-Mepy) led to the isolation of the coordination polymers -poly[[bis-(3,5-di-chloro-pyridine)-copper(II)]-di-μ-bromido], [CuBr(CHClN)] or [CuBr(3,5-Clpy)] (), and -poly[[bis-(3,5-di-methyl-pyridine)-copper(II)]-di-μ-bromido], [CuBr(CHN)] or [CuBr(3,5-Mepy)] (), respectively. The structures are characterized by bibromide-bridged chains [(av.) = 3.

Size and Shape Effect of Countercations on Depolymerization and Water Oxidation Catalysis of Cyano-Bridged Coordination Polymers.

Inorg Chem

March 2025

Chemistry and Bioengineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka Metropolitan University, Sugimoto, Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka 558-8585, Japan.

A cyano-bridged coordination polymer (CP), K{Co[Fe(CN)]} {(K)}, insoluble in water was successfully solubilized by countercation exchange with MeN ions. On the one hand, the resultant powder remained insoluble after countercation exchange with NH or EtN ions. Powder X-ray diffraction measurements indicated that solubility was closely related to the crystal structures of the obtained powder after countercation exchange.

The structural basis for the human procollagen lysine hydroxylation and dual-glycosylation.

Nat Commun

March 2025

Department of Orthopaedics, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Orthopaedic Implant, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, 200011, China.

The proper assembly and maturation of collagens necessitate the orchestrated hydroxylation and glycosylation of multiple lysyl residues in procollagen chains. Dysfunctions in this multistep modification process can lead to severe collagen-associated diseases. To elucidate the coordination of lysyl processing activities, we determine the cryo-EM structures of the enzyme complex formed by LH3/PLOD3 and GLT25D1/ColGalT1, designated as the KOGG complex.

Controllable strategies for the design of molecular ferroelectrics have been actively pursued in recent years due to their promising applications in modern electronic devices. In this work, we present a spiro-driven approach for the design of a new class of molecular ferroelectrics. Using 2-morpholinoethanol (MEO) as a bidentate chelating ligand and the SCN- anion as a bridging co-ligand, we obtained a neutral chain-like ferroelectric coordination polymer, [Cd(MEO)(SCN)2].
