Published: January 2025

Objective: Glioma is a common tumor in neurosurgery. Glut-1 is the main carrier of glucose uptake by cells and can provide energy through the glycolytic pathway. However, the role and related mechanisms of Glut-1 in glioma have not yet been elucidated.

Methods: Real time PCR and Western blot were done to assess Glut-1 level in glioma tumor tissues and adjacent tissues. Glioma U87 cells were separated into control group; Glut-1 negative control (NC group); and Glut-1 siRNA group followed by analysis of Glut-1 expression, cell proliferation by MTT assay, cell invasion, cell apoptosis and cycle by flow cytometry and AKT / mTOR signaling proteins level by Western blot.

Results: Glut-1 expression was significantly increased in the tissues of glioma patients (P < 0.05) compared to adjacent tissues and its level was related to tumor size, pathological grade and survival. Down-regulating the expression of Glut-1 can significantly inhibit tumor cell proliferation and invasion, increase apoptosis and induce G0 phase of cell cycle arrest, and inhibit the expression of AKT / mTOR signaling proteins phosphorylation (P < 0.05).

Conclusions: Glut-1 level in glioma tissues is significantly increased, which is related to the pathological features. Down-regulating Glut-1 can inhibit glioma by regulating the AKT / mTOR signaling pathway.

Glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1) upregulation in vitiligo: A possible link to skin depigmentation.

Gene

March 2025

Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Andrology Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University, Ismailia 41522, Egypt. Electronic address:

Background: Vitiligo is a prevalent autoimmune skin disorder characterized by progressive depigmented patches of the skin and/or mucosa. Lately, extensive research has been investigating molecular pathogenesis underlying vitiligo, epidermal-immune cell crosstalk, structural aberrations in cellular skin components and immune cell metabolism derangements. Glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1) has recently proved to be increased in proinflammatory conditions and autoimmune diseases.

Female sex hormones and the oral contraceptive pill modulate asthma severity through GLUT-1.

The University of Newcastle and Immune Health Program, Hunter Medical Research Institute, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Electronic address:

Females are disproportionately affected by asthma. An increased understanding of how female sex hormones influence key pathophysiological processes that underpin asthma may identify new, more effective asthma therapies, particularly for females with severe, poorly controlled asthma. We assessed the effects of oral ethinylestradiol/levonorgestrel (representing OCP use) and depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) and estradiol injections on key features of experimental asthma, and determined their effects on glucose transporter-1 (GLUT-1).

Hybrid peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs) are benign tumors that show features of more than one type of PNST. Benign cutaneous plexiform hybrid tumor of perineurioma and cellular neurothekeoma (BCPHTPCN) is a rare, recently described entity that shows various combinations of histomorphologic and immunophenotypic features of the PNSTs perineurioma and cellular neurothekeoma. Our case describes a middle-aged man initially presenting with an acute papulopustular rosacea flare.

Understanding hormonal and molecular changes during the transition from preterm to near-term gestation is essential for investigating how pregnancy complications impact fetal heart development and contribute to long-term cardiovascular risks for offspring. This study examines these cardiac changes in fetal sheep, focusing on the changes between 116 days (preterm) and 140 days (near term) of gestation (dG, term = 150) using Western blotting, LC-MS/MS, and histological techniques. We observed a strong correlation between cortisol and T (Triiodothyronine) in heart tissue in near-term fetuses, highlighting the role of glucocorticoid signalling in fetal heart maturation.

F-FDG PET/CT findings of erythema induratum.

Radiol Case Rep

April 2025

Department of Nuclear Medicine, Yeungnam University Hospital, Daegu, Korea.

F-FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose) accumulates in malignant tissues but also at the sites of infection and inflammation and in autoimmune and granulomatous diseases by the overexpression of distinct facultative glucose transporter (GLUT) isotypes (mainly GLUT-1 and GLUT-3) in cancer cells and inflammatory cells. A 75-year-old female with a history of skin rash with tenderness for 1 month underwent F-FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) to determine the presence of an underlying disease including malignant tumor. The F-FDG PET/CT showed hypermetabolic nodules at subcutaneous tissue (right upper arm, bilateral lower back and buttock, both thigh).
