This study aimed to evaluate the effects of functional foods containing powder on gut health and clinical indicators in middle-aged and older adults. Participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (n = 24) or control group (n = 26), and assessments including anthropometric measurements, blood analyses, and dietary intake surveys were conducted. The intervention group consumed functional foods containing powder twice daily for 8 weeks. No statistically significant differences were observed in the gut environmental parameters between the 2 groups. However, reductions in waist circumference (p < 0.021), abdominal obesity (p < 0.006), and triglyceride levels (p < 0.016) in the intervention group were statistically significant. Additionally, an analysis of nutrient intake from meals other than the intervention food revealed a significant increase in dietary fiber (p < 0.043), vitamin B1 (p < 0.027), and folic acid (p < 0.006) intake in the intervention group. Although the intervention improved the selection of body composition and blood parameters, it failed to produce significant changes in constipation outcomes or gut environmental parameters among participants with constipation. In conclusion, the consumption of powder-based functional foods resulted in limited yet meaningful improvements, specifically in reducing waist circumference and triglyceride levels.

Lactic acid bacteria present in yogurts produce bioactive compounds, such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Sheep's milk yogurt is an excellent medium to enhance their bioactive properties. In this study, the impact of adding an extract derived from the GABA-producing strain UCLM56 to sheep's milk yogurt was evaluated in terms of its bioactive and antioxidant properties.

Lytic cell death including necroptosis and pyroptosis is induced by mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein (MLKL) phosphorylation and inflammatory caspase specific cleavage Gasdermins in higher mammals, respectively. In this study, we identified a novel MLKL homolog containing a tetrapeptide recognition motif (14-LVAD-17) of inflammatory caspase from Apostichopus japonicus,which was absent of Gasdermins member by genome screening. Functional analysis revealed that AjMLKL was involved in the regulation of Vibrio splendidus AJ01 infection induced lytic coelomocyte death in a cleavage-dependent manner, but not through RIPK3-dependent phosphorylation as mammals.

Synthetic metal chelators are widely used in industrial, clinical, and agricultural settings, leading to their accumulation in the environment. We measured the growth of , a soil and aquatic bacterium, in the presence of the ubiquitous chelator ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and found that it restricts growth by lowering intracellular iron levels. Using barcoded transposon sequencing, we identified an operonic gene pair, , that is required to maintain iron homeostasis in laboratory media during EDTA challenge.

Unlabelled: Insertion sequences (ISs) are key components of most bacterial genomes and play a crucial role in bacterial mutagenesis. In this study, we observed the insertion of an IS element, ISLrh, from the M1 genome into plasmid pGK12, resulting in the generation of a new plasmid, pTRK829. This insertion enabled pTRK829 to replicate in hosts previously incompatible with pGK12, including M1, GG (LGG), ATCC 393, and ATCC 25598.

In this work, alginate nanoparticles (ALG-NPs) were synthesized using reverse micelles (RMs) as nanoreactors to investigate how interfacial charge influences their structure, size, and encapsulation properties. Three types of RMs were employed: (i) anionic RMs formed by sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) in isopropyl myristate, (ii) cationic RMs formed by benzyl-hexadecyl-dimethylammonium chloride (BHDC) in toluene, and (iii) nonionic RMs formed by 2-[4-(2,4,4-trimethylpentan-2-yl)phenoxy]ethanol (TX-100) in cyclohexane. ALG-NPs were synthesized at varying water contents ( = [HO]/[surfactant]) and resuspended in water at pH 6.
