Thin-film β tungsten (β-W), a metastable phase of tungsten, holds significant potential in the fabrication of superconducting and spin-memory devices. However, due to the rapid surface passivation of tungsten in oxygen and moisture, the synthesis of nanosized metastable β-W with the intrinsic atomic surface is still difficult, and their magnetic properties remain rather unexplored. Inspired by the strong host-guest interaction-induced stabilization, we reported the synthesis of atomically thin (1.0-1.3 nm) metastable β-W nanowires within single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) through an oxygen-assisted transformation of starting WC, with 85% of β-W nanowires along the anisotropic ⟨010⟩ direction. Atomically resolved electron microscopy directly unveils the dynamic evolutions of WC-to-β-W and further β-to-αW within SWCNTs, depending on the H-annealing time. Detailed mechanistic studies by theoretical calculations and experiments reveal that oxygen diffused within the WC lattice governs the formation and stabilization of ultrathin β-W nanowires within the SWCNTs. Additionally, the nanoconfinement of SWCNTs, restricting the thickness of W nanowires down to 2 nm, also benefits the thermodynamically favorable nucleation of β-W than α-W. With the protection of a single graphene layer against water erosion, β-W@SWCNTs exhibit a ferromagnetic response at ∼130 K, with higher chemical stability than fully exposed thin-film β-W. This work may provide a feasible way to design the ferromagnetic nanowire metamaterials based on aligned SWCNT arrays that have the potential to fabricate microwave and spin devices.

Metal halide perovskites have excellent optoelectronic properties. This study aims to determine how the optoelectronic properties of a model perovskite, cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr), change with length and thickness in one dimension (1D). By examining the photophysics of CsPbBr quantum dots (QDs), nanowires (NWs), and nanorods (NRs), we observe the influence of confinement, exciton diffusion, and trapping on their optical properties.

The performance of the electrocatalytic CO reduction reaction (CORR) is highly dependent on the microenvironment around the cathode. Despite efforts to optimize the microenvironment by modifying nanostructured catalysts or microporous gas diffusion electrodes, their inherent disorder presents a significant challenge to understanding how interfacial structure arrangement within the electrode governs the microenvironment for CORR. This knowledge gap limits fundamental understanding of CORR while also hindering efforts to enhance CORR selectivity and activity.

Developing high-performance photothermal materials and unraveling the underlying mechanism are essential for photothermal applications. Here, photothermal performance improved by strong interaction between plasmon and topological surface state (TSS) is demonstrated in BiSe/CuS nanowires. This hybrid, which CuS nanosheets were grown on BiSe nanowires, leverages the plasmon resonance and TSS-induced optical property, generating wide and efficient light absorption.

Here, we demonstrate through AFM imaging and CD spectroscopy that the binding of silver ions (Ag) to poly(dGdC), a double-stranded (ds) DNA composed of two identical repeating strands, at a stoichiometry of one Ag per GC base pair induces a one-base shift of one strand relative to the other. This results in a ds nucleic acid-Ag conjugate consisting of alternating CC and GG base pairs coordinated by silver ions. The proposed organization of the conjugate is supported by the results of our Quantum Mechanical (QM) and Molecular Mechanics (MMs) calculations.

This study investigates the thermal pinning and depinning behaviors of vortex domain walls (VWs) in constricted magnetic nanowires, focusing on the influence of intrinsic magnetic properties on VW stability under thermal stress. Using micromagnetic simulations, we analyze the roles of saturation magnetization (Ms), uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (Ku), and nanowire geometry in determining VW thermal stability. The modeled nanowire has dimensions of 200 nm (width), 30 nm (thickness), and a 50 nm constriction length, chosen based on the dependence of VW formation on nanowire geometry.
