Micromachines capable of performing diverse mechanical tasks in complex and constrained microenvironments are of great interest. Despite important milestones in this pursuit, until now, micromachines are confined to actuation within a single 2D plane due to the challenges of transferring motion across different planes in limited space. Here, a breakthrough method is presented to overcome this limitation: multi-component micromachines that facilitate 3D motion transfer across different planes. These light-driven 3D micromachines, fabricated using standard photolithography combined with direct laser writing, are assembled and actuated via programmable light patterns within an optoelectronic tweezers system. Utilizing charge-induced repulsion and dielectrophoretic levitation effects, the micromachines enable highly efficient mechanical rotation and effective inter-component motion transfer. Through this work, fascinating patterns of similarities are unveiled for the new microscale 3D systems when compared with the macro-scale world in which they live, paving the way for the development of micromechanical devices and microsystems with ever increasing functionality and versatility.

Surgical options for relapsed clubfoot include repeat heel cord lengthening or posterior release for recurrent equinus, and anterior tibialis tendon transfer (ATT) for residual dynamic supination deformity. Some studies have suggested that these procedures be performed in isolation to allow for early range of motion after intra-articular surgery. This study was performed to examine clinical and radiographic outcomes comparing two surgical methods, simultaneous ATT with posterior release (ATT/PR) vs ATT performed in isolation (ATT(i)), for the management of recurrent clubfoot deformity.

To improve the settling time for high-speed point-to-point motion, a piecewise-model feedforward controller is introduced which utilizes multiple inverse sub-models with bumpless transfer between them. As the transfer function of this bumpless feedforward controller is non-commutative and non-invertible, a set of special perturbation and reference inputs are designed to extract the signals required for computing the gradient of the cost function. In this way, the optimal parameters within different motion phases are found within an integrated process.

One of the pleasures of interacting using avatars in VR is being able to play a character very different to yourself. As the scale of characters change relative to a user, there is a need to retarget user motions onto the character, generally maintaining either the user's pose or the position of their wrists and ankles. This retargeting can impact both the functional and social information conveyed by the avatar.

A hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics setup was used to model the singlet fission (SF) of electronically excited 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) in the crystalline phase. The optically bright S state possesses nearly identical excitation energies and oscillator strengths in the two nonequivalent dimer units with and structural overlap, respectively. A shearing/tilting motion of the two slip-stacked TIPS-pentacene building blocks is the key for stabilizing the singlet-coupled triplet-pair state, (TT), in the overlap situation.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of visual impairment and blindness worldwide, necessitating early detection and accurate diagnosis. This study proposes a novel framework integrating Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for data augmentation, denoising autoencoders for noise reduction, and transfer learning with EfficientNetB0 to enhance the performance of DR classification models.
Methods: GANs were employed to generate high-quality synthetic retinal images, effectively addressing class imbalance and enriching the training dataset.
