We consider the observables describing spatiotemporal properties in the context of two of the most popular approaches to quantum gravity (QG), namely String Theory and Loop QG. In both approaches these observables are described by non-commuting operators. In analogy with recent arguments put forward in the context of non-relativistic quantum mechanics [see Calosi and Mariani (Philos. Compass 16(4):e12731, 2021) for a review], we suggest that the physical quantities corresponding to those observables may be interpreted as -i.e., indeterminate in a way that is non-epistemic and semantic-independent. This working hypothesis has not received enough attention in the current debate on QG, and yet it may prove explanatory useful in several respects. First, it provides a clear background for understanding how some features of QG are ontologically continuous to features of quantum mechanics. Second, it sets the stage for asking new interesting questions about QG, for instance concerning the status of the so-called Eigenstate-Eigenvalue link. Third, it indirectly shows how the debate on may extend well beyond the non-relativistic case, contrary to what seems to be assumed. Fourth, and perhaps more importantly, it provides a promising alternative to the received view on QG [Wüthrich et al. (Philosophy Beyond Spacetime: Implications from Quantum Gravity, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2021)] according to which spacetime is not fundamental. On the view we shall suggest, spacetime may be indeterminate and yet fundamental.

Absence of Weak Localization on Negative Curvature Surfaces.

Phys Rev Lett

February 2025

Joint Quantum Institute, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland 20783 USA.

The interplay between disorder and quantum interference leads to a wide variety of physical phenomena including celebrated Anderson localization-the complete absence of diffusive transport due to quantum interference between different particle trajectories. In two dimensions, any amount of disorder is thought to induce localization of all states at long enough length scales. In this Letter, we present an argument providing a mechanism for disrupting localization: by tuning the underlying curvature of the manifold on which diffusion takes place.

Highly accurate and precise electronic structure calculations of heavy radioactive atoms and their molecules are important for several research areas, including chemical, nuclear, and particle physics. Ab initio quantum chemistry can elucidate structural details in these systems that emerge from the interplay of relativistic and electron correlation effects, but the large number of electrons complicates the calculations, and the scarcity of experiments prevents insightful theory-experiment comparisons. Here we report the spectroscopy of the 14 lowest excited electronic states in the radioactive molecule radium monofluoride (RaF), which is proposed as a sensitive probe for searches of new physics.

What if gravity is classical? If true, a consistent coexistence of classical gravity and quantum matter requires that gravity exhibit irreducible fluctuations. These fluctuations can mediate classical correlations, but not quantum entanglement, between the quantized motion of the gravitationally interacting matter. We use a consistent theory of quantum-classical dynamics in the Newtonian limit of gravity to show that experimentally relevant observables can conclusively test the hypothesis that gravity is classical.

Extending the QMM Framework to the Strong and Weak Interactions.

Entropy (Basel)

Terra Quantum AG, Kornhausstrasse 25, 9000 St. Gallen, Switzerland.

We extend the Quantum Memory Matrix (QMM) framework, originally developed to reconcile quantum mechanics and general relativity by treating space-time as a dynamic information reservoir, to incorporate the full suite of Standard Model gauge interactions. In this discretized, Planck-scale formulation, each space-time cell possesses a finite-dimensional Hilbert space that acts as a local memory, or , for matter and gauge field configurations. We focus on embedding non-Abelian SU(3) (quantum chromodynamics) and SU(2) × U(1) (electroweak interactions) into QMM by constructing gauge-invariant imprint operators for quarks, gluons, electroweak bosons, and the Higgs mechanism.

Horizon quantum mechanics for coherent quantum black holes.

Eur Phys J Plus

February 2025

Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia, Università di Bologna, via Irnerio 46, 40126 Bologna, Italy.

The formalism of the horizon quantum mechanics is applied to electrically neutral and spherically symmetric black hole geometries emerging from coherent quantum states of gravity to compute the probability that the matter source is inside the horizon. We find that quantum corrections to the classical horizon radius become significant if the matter core has a size comparable to the Compton length of the constituents, and the system is indeed a black hole with probability very close to one unless the core radius is close to the (classical) gravitational radius.
